placeformspace design studio

Melbourne

There's a version of this job that's just drafting. This isn't it.

Placeformspace is a building design practice. We are not an architectural practice and we do not provide architectural services. What we do have is a portfolio that refuses to settle into a type — a warehouse conversion into a brewery, a house with a sunken garden, a fitout with an unreasonable deadline — spread across Victoria and interstate. Have a look at www.placeformspace.com and see for yourself what we're doing. Small studio means the project you sketch is the project you document is the project you stand on site for. It also means there's nowhere to hide. Some people love that. Some people really don't.

We're after someone three or four days a week. Four is our preference; three works for the right person. Either way, the days off are genuinely yours — we're not going to quietly turn this into five.

What you'd actually be doing

• Taking projects from first sketch through planning, permit and construction — the whole arc, not one slice of it

- Modelling and documenting in Archicad properly, in a way that makes the next person's life easier
- Sitting across from clients, councils, consultants and builders, and holding your own
- Making things look valuable — boards, renders, the decks that win the work in the first place
- Arguing with us about how the studio should run. We're rebuilding our BIM templates and visualisation pipeline and we'd rather have your opinion than your obedience

Being honest about it

You'll do glamorous work and deeply unglamorous work in the same afternoon. Some projects are constrained to within an inch of their life. The interstate jobs mean learning planning regimes and NCC variations that aren't Victoria's. There's no big team to absorb a slip. What you get in exchange is scope — the kind most people at your level don't see for another five years.

Who we're hoping turns up

• A degree or diploma in architecture or building design

- 2+ years in an Australian office. You've been through a permit set and you know where the bodies are buried
- Archicad fluency, Teamwork included
- Adobe or Canva — enough to make a page look considered rather than assembled
- A working command of the NCC, Australian Standards, and the Victorian planning and permit process
- Someone who can be handed a brief and a deadline without needing a chaperone
- A real communicator. Half this job is explaining something carefully to someone who doesn't do this for a living
- Ongoing rights to work in Australia

What we're not fussed about

Where you studied. Whether your portfolio is glossy. Whether you took time off, changed direction, or came to this late. Show us you can think and we're interested.

Nice, but not essential

• Twinmotion, Enscape, D5, Lumion or similar

- Interstate project experience
- Prefab, mass timber, or high-performance all-electric work
- A live interest in where the tools are heading — parametric workflows, AI-assisted documentation, whatever you've been quietly messing with on weekends

What you get

• Three or four days a week. $75,000–$80,000 full-time equivalent depending on experience, plus super — roughly $60,000–$64,000 for four days, or $45,000–$48,000 for three

- Flexible starts
- A direct line to the director. No layers
- The software to do the work properly
- Authorship. Credit for what you design, and our blessing to show it in your own portfolio

How to apply

Send a CV and portfolio (PDF, under 10MB) to [email protected]. Skip the cover letter — we'd rather have a few sentences on each of these:

- A project you ran, and the part you'd do differently
- A building you admire that isn't yours, and why

Applications close 01.09.26. We read them as they arrive, so early is better than polished.
