Our client is a large Commonwealth government department responsible for advancing Australia’s international economic, trade and foreign policy interests.

Within the department, a specialist team leads delivery of Australia’s bilateral green economy agreements, coordinating energy transition, industrial decarbonisation and agriculture decarbonisation initiatives with international partners.

Two new roles have been created in this team, funded through the most recent Federal Budget, to meet a growing program of work.

The Opportunity

This EL1 Policy role sits within a team responsible for implementing the international Green Economy Agreement and shaping where Australia builds its next green economy partnerships, including with countries in Asia.

You’ll work alongside two existing EL1 Assistant Directors, with the team’s process and policy agenda currently being driven by a colleague on a six-month secondment.

The role covers a broad remit spanning energy transition, industrial decarbonisation and decarbonisation in agriculture, with a second round of grant funding under the existing Singapore program due for announcement in late November.

You’ll also contribute to the Australian Government’s ambition to position Australia as a renewable energy superpower, identifying export, trade and investment opportunities across the region.

The Role

This role combines hands-on policy development with oversight of the department’s day-to-day delivery of its Singapore green economy partnership.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Leading development and implementation of policy initiatives under the Green Economy Agreement
- Assessing opportunities to build green economy partnerships with other countries, including the Republic of Korea, Indonesia and Malaysia
- Managing stakeholder relationships with Australian and international government counterparts and key external partners
- Coordinating the Australian Government’s cross-portfolio engagement on green economy issues, working closely with agencies such as the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water




- Providing high-quality advice, briefs, Cabinet materials and ministerial correspondence on green economy cooperation
- Providing oversight and direction to the APS6 grants role, including administration of a second grant funding round due in late November
- Identifying risks, opportunities and emerging trends across Australia’s green economy partnerships

The Ideal Person

You’ve delivered policy development in at least one green economy sector and you’re comfortable stepping into a role with a genuinely broad remit.

Trade or international policy experience is valuable but not essential here; what matters most is that you understand how policy translates into practical, on-the-ground outcomes in your sector.

You will bring:

- A demonstrated track record delivering policy development in at least one green economy sector
- Sound judgement on when to progress work independently and when to escalate emerging issues
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build relationships across government and with international counterparts
- A minimum NV1 security clearance

It would also be desirable if you have:

- Experience in international or trade policy, with sector expertise valued over a foreign affairs background
- Exposure to grants administration or program delivery, given this role oversees the APS6 grants function

Salary / Rate

- $100/hr – $120/hr + Super
- Labour hire contract, 24-month initial term with a further 12-month extension option
- Based in Barton primarily with some flexibility to work from home
