H.Troon Design Manager
About the role
H.Troon is seeking a motivated Design Manager to join our growing construction team, based from our Ballarat office. This is a hands-on role offering exposure to a diverse portfolio of commercial construction projects throughout regional Victoria and Australia, working closely with our design team, Project Managers, site teams, consultants and subcontractors.
The role will be based from our Ballarat office; however, we see getting out to our projects as an important part of the role. You will have the chance to work from project sites, visit our other H.Troon offices and travel to projects across Victoria and interstate. This exposure provides the opportunity to work directly with our site teams, see design outcomes come to life and further develop your practical construction knowledge.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination of project design, helping drive documentation from design development through construction and ensuring information is coordinated, buildable and delivered in line with project requirements.
A design role with a genuine point of difference
What sets this role apart from a typical Design Manager position is H.Troon’s in-house manufacturing capability. We manufacture our own structural steel, architectural aluminium and commercial joinery through our Ballarat manufacturing operations – giving our design team direct access to the people who detail, fabricate and ultimately install key elements of our projects.
For someone looking to develop their career, this provides a unique opportunity to upskill beyond traditional design coordination and gain practical knowledge of fabrication, detailing, procurement, constructability and installation.
You won't just coordinate drawings and documentation. You will have the opportunity to follow design decisions from the consultants' drawings, through shop detailing and manufacturing, and ultimately see how those decisions translate into construction onsite.
We believe this exposure develops better Design Managers and provides a level of practical construction knowledge that is difficult to gain working for a traditional builder.
Key responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day coordination of design activities across allocated projects.
- Work closely with the design team,
Project Managers and construction teams to drive design outcomes.
- Coordinate architectural, structural, civil, services and specialist subcontractor design to ensure disciplines are fully integrated.
- Develop, manage and track design deliverables to ensure information is issued in accordance with project programmes.
- Coordinate RFIs, shop drawings, samples and technical submissions through the design and construction process.
- Review documentation for coordination, buildability, completeness and compliance with project requirements.
- Work directly with our in-house steel, aluminium and joinery teams to understand detailing, fabrication requirements and constructability.
- Identify design risks, clashes and potential construction issues early and work with the wider project team to resolve them.
- Assist with building permit submissions, authority requirements and consultant coordination where required.
- Ensure design processes are undertaken in accordance with project Quality Plans and H.Troon procedures.
- Maintain clear communication between consultants, subcontractors, clients and internal project teams.
- Promote timely decision-making and a collaborative approach to resolving design issues.
About you
We are looking for someone who is technically capable, organised and, importantly, keen to learn and develop their broader construction knowledge. Ideally, you will have:
- 2–4 years' experience in design coordination, design management or a similar role within commercial construction.
- A relevant qualification in architecture, engineering, construction management or a related discipline.
- A strong understanding of construction documentation and multidisciplinary design coordination.
- The ability to identify coordination issues and work collaboratively with consultants and construction teams to resolve them.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- Experience with design collaboration and document control platforms such as Aconex, ProjectSight and Smartsheet.
- A practical mindset and genuine interest in understanding how things are detailed, manufactured and built.
- The ability to manage competing priorities across multiple design packages and project deadlines.
- A willingness to travel to our other offices and project sites as part of the role.
Why H.Troon?
H.Troon is a fifth-generation Australian construction company delivering significant commercial projects across Victoria and throughout Australia. Our combination of construction and in-house manufacturing creates a working environment and learning opportunity that is different to most commercial builders.
As part of our design team, you will have the opportunity to:
- Learn directly from our structural steel, architectural aluminium and joinery manufacturing teams.
- Develop knowledge beyond traditional design coordination into detailing, fabrication, procurement, constructability and installation.
- Follow projects from design through manufacturing and construction onsite, seeing firsthand how design decisions actually translate into the finished product.
- Gain exposure to complex commercial projects across regional Victoria and Australia.
- Travel to project sites and work directly with our construction teams.
- Visit and work from our other H.Troon offices, providing exposure to different teams and projects across the business.
- Work from project sites where required, providing direct exposure to the construction process and the opportunity to see design decisions implemented onsite.
- Work with experienced senior design and construction professionals who can help further develop your knowledge and career.
- Use leading construction and project management systems.
- Build a genuine long-term career within a growing construction business.
- Receive additional paid leave days and a range of employee benefits.
For someone looking to become a well-rounded Design Manager, this is an opportunity to learn more than simply how to manage drawings and a design programme. You will have the opportunity to learn how the things you coordinate are actually detailed, manufactured and built.
