Community Early Learning Australia
Sydney
Mid-weight to senior. Full time, hybrid office/home (Sydney - Gadigal Country).
Design with purpose. Make a difference for Australia’s children.
One day you might be building a campaign across print and social, the next you're editing a short video for a training launch, prototyping a new digital experience, or finding a faster way to get a presentation from brief to final using AI tools. If that mix sounds energising, this could be the role for you.
Community Early Learning Australia (CELA) is a not-for-profit member organisation supporting early education and care services, educators and leaders across Australia. We're looking for a mid-weight to senior designer to drive how we look, feel and connect with our audiences, and to help us work smarter as AI reshapes what's possible for small creative teams.
This isn't a role where design sits at the end of the process waiting for a brief. You'll have real input into CELA's visual direction, our design systems and how we adopt current tools, working as part of the marketing and communications team and reporting to the marketing and communications director.
What you'll be doing
Design and brand
- Developing creative concepts and delivering design across campaigns, publications, member resources, training materials, presentations and social.
- Stewarding the CELA brand so our work stays distinctive, consistent and accessible.
- Turning complex or technical information into visual stories people actually want to engage with.
- Building templates, design systems and reusable assets that raise the bar for everyone else's work too.
Digital and video
- Contributing to the design and improvement of our websites, learning platforms and member environments.
- Creating and editing short-form video and motion content for campaigns, training, events and social.
AI and ways of working
- Using AI-assisted tools to speed up concepting, production, image creation and routine design tasks.
- Exploring emerging AI, video and design tools and sharing what you learn with the wider team.
- Helping improve how design work gets briefed, prioritised, reviewed and delivered.
What you'll bring A strong portfolio across brand, publication, campaign and digital work, and the confidence to take a project from a first idea to a polished, final piece.
We're particularly interested in someone who has:
- Strong Adobe Creative Cloud skills, especially InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
- Strong experience working with the Microsoft Office suite including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
- A real AI-assisted design workflow already in motion, whether that's Firefly, Midjourney, Canva AI or something else you've made your own, or you’ve created yourself.
- Experience producing and editing short-form video, or a strong track record of picking up new tools fast.
- Solid grounding in typography, layout, information design, brand systems and print production.
- An understanding of accessible and inclusive design, including WCAG-informed digital and document design.
- The organisational skills to run several projects at once, and the confidence to explain your thinking to stakeholders and push back when quality is at stake.
A tertiary qualification in graphic design, visual communication, interaction design or a related field is desirable; equivalent experience is just as welcome.
Experience in a member-based, education, professional services, not-for-profit or purpose-led organisation is a plus, as is familiarity with any of: Premiere Pro, Descript or CapCut; Kentico, SharePoint, Thinkific or Higher Logic; ClickUp; Zapier; or experience introducing new AI tools or ways of working to a team. You don't need to know all of these; we care more about your ability to learn and experiment.
Why this role is important at CELA
CELA has worked alongside the early education and care sector for almost 50 years. Design here isn't decoration; it's how we make important information clear, support our members and communicate ideas that matter to thousands of educators and services.
You'll also get to help shape what comes next: how CELA uses AI, video, digital experience and smarter design systems to lift both the quality and the reach of our work. If you're the kind of designer who wants to build the system, not just work inside one, this is a rare chance to do that inside a sector role.
Child safety requirements
CELA is committed to the safety, wellbeing and rights of children. The successful applicant must hold a current Working with Children Check and National Police Check, or be willing and eligible to obtain these before starting.
How to apply
Send your CV and a portfolio or examples of recent work across a range of formats.
We'd love to see how you think, not just the finished product. Show us a brief that changed shape once you got into it, a campaign you took across several channels, or a piece of work where AI genuinely improved your process rather than just speeding it up.
If you're a strong designer who's curious about new technology, likes solving real problems and wants your work to matter, we'd love to hear from you.
Apply by Friday 4 August.
