Richos Diesel Maintenance is looking for an experienced Leading Hand Diesel Fitter to join our team. This is a genuine Leading Hand position designed around an approximate 50/50 split between working on the tools and leading, organising and coordinating the day-to-day workload.
We are looking for someone who enjoys being a Diesel Fitter but is ready to take the next step — taking greater responsibility for jobs, supporting the team and helping manage the daily workflow.
RDM works primarily across earthmoving, civil and heavy equipment, carrying out everything from general servicing and breakdowns through to diagnostics, major repairs and project work.
The Role – 50% Tools / 50% Leading Hand
You won't be sitting behind a desk all day, and you won't simply be another fitter expected to organise everyone else while carrying a full workload yourself. The role is intended to be approximately:
50% Hands-On
- Servicing and repairs
- Diagnostics and fault finding
- Breakdown work
- Major component repairs and replacements
- Assisting the team with more complex jobs
50% Leading Hand
- Planning and coordinating daily jobs
- Allocating work across the team
- Supporting and mentoring fitters and apprentices
- Liaising directly with customers
- Monitoring jobs and keeping work moving
- Coordinating parts and materials required for upcoming work
- Checking workmanship and maintaining RDM's standards
- Ensuring job documentation is completed
- Identifying potential delays or problems before they affect the job
- Working directly with management on scheduling and priorities
What We're Looking For
Ideally, you will have:
- Trade qualification as a Diesel Fitter / Heavy Vehicle Mechanic
- Strong experience with earthmoving and heavy diesel equipment
- Good diagnostic and fault-finding ability
- Previous Leading Hand, supervisory or senior tradesperson experience
- Solid communication and organisational skills
- Ability to manage your own workload and help coordinate others
- Confidence dealing directly with customers
- A practical approach to problem solving
- Good understanding of workplace safety and quality requirements
- Current Australian driver's licence
Previous Leading Hand experience would be an advantage, but we're also interested in hearing from an experienced tradesperson who is ready to take the next step.
What RDM Offers
RDM is a smaller business where the Leading Hand is an important part of the operation — not just another employee with a different title.
The package includes
- Competitive hourly rate based on experience
- Company vehicle supplied as part of the position
- Fuel and running costs covered by RDM for work-related use
- Overtime and penalty rates
- Approximately 50/50 on and off the tools
- Variety of workshop and field work
- Independence and flexibility in how you manage your work
- Direct involvement in planning and day-to-day operations
- Direct access to the business owners
- Training and support to develop your leadership and management skills
- A genuine opportunity to grow with the business
The Person We're Looking For
Qualifications and experience matter, but attitude and ownership are just as important. We're looking for someone who can look beyond the job directly in front of them and think about what needs to happen next.
Someone who can organise tomorrow's workload, communicate with a customer, help an apprentice through a difficult job and then get back on the tools when the team needs them.
You don't need to know everything.
What matters is that you're prepared to take ownership, communicate, make decisions and lead by example.
If you're an experienced Diesel Fitter who is ready for more responsibility while still wanting to stay on the tools, we'd like to hear from you.
Apply through SEEK with your resume and a brief introduction outlining your experience and why you're interested in joining RDM.
