ACOSH Executive Member The Australian Council on Smoking & Health (ACOSH) is seeking Expressions of Interest from an experienced, values-aligned finance professional to join ACOSH’s Executive Committee.

This is a voluntary governance role for someone who can bring sound financial judgement to a growing national tobacco control advocacy organisation and help steward ACOSH’s financial sustainability, accountability and impact.

About ACOSH

ACOSH is Australia’s peak health body for tobacco control advocacy, working to protect Australians from tobacco and nicotine-related harm.

At a pivotal point in its growth, ACOSH is expanding its national role, growing its team and managing a substantially larger program of work across policy, advocacy, research and communications.

The opportunity

We are looking for a finance professional who wants to bring their judgement, perspective and governance capability to work that has genuine national impact.

You will not be asked to do the day-to-day books. Instead, you will help the Executive Committee make strong, confident decisions about sustainability, risk, investment and growth.

It is an opportunity to contribute your expertise to a values-led, independent organisation; work alongside experienced public-health leaders; and help ensure ACOSH has the financial foundations to match its ambition.

The role

Under ACOSH’s Constitution, the Executive Committee controls and manages ACOSH’s affairs, subject to the Council’s powers and functions. The Council may delegate staffing and finance matters to the Executive Committee.

This Executive Committee role will bring additional financial acumen to ACOSH’s governance, providing oversight and assurance. When the current Treasurer’s role becomes vacant, the appointee may be considered for Treasurer, subject to Council processes at that time.





ACOSH’s day-to-day financial administration is managed by an external accounting provider. The Executive Committee receives regular financial reporting and provides governance oversight, strategic direction and assurance.

As an Executive Committee member, you will:

- Bring financial insight to Executive Committee discussions, including ACOSH’s financial position, budgets, cash flow, financial reports and key financial risks.
- Support robust financial reporting, internal controls, delegations, risk management and organisational sustainability.
- Contribute to oversight of the annual budget, audit and audited accounts, and provide constructive challenge and advice to the Treasurer, CEO and Executive Committee.
- Contribute to ACOSH’s wider governance, strategy and decision-making within the authority delegated by Council.
- Act in ACOSH’s best interests, prepare properly for meetings, participate constructively in collective decisions and appropriately manage material personal interests.

Skills and experience We are looking for a candidate with:

- CA, CPA or equivalent senior financial qualification or experience.
- Senior capability in financial management, accounting, audit, risk, governance or business leadership.
- Confidence reading and challenging financial reports, budgets and cash-flow information.
- Sound judgement, integrity, independence and collaborative governance capability.




- A commitment to ACOSH’s purpose and to improving public health.

Experience in a not-for-profit, health, government-funded or advocacy organisation is desirable, as is previous board, council or committee experience. Constitutional eligibility and commitment

This role is open to finance professionals whether or not they are affiliated with a member organisation. Under ACOSH’s Constitution, individuals may join Council as individual members. Council membership is required before an individual can be elected or appointed to the Executive Committee. Executive Committee members are elected by Council for one-year terms and may stand for re-election.

ACOSH anticipates approximately 12 scheduled Executive Committee meetings each year, together with Council meetings and the Annual General Meeting. Members must prepare for meetings and may be asked to participate in occasional out-of-session decisions or working groups.

The role is unpaid. Reasonable out-of-pocket travel and accommodation expenses properly incurred on ACOSH business may be reimbursed in accordance with the Constitution.
