GENERAL MANAGER / LICENSEE - HIGH-VOLUME COMMUNITY PUB
Hands-On Leadership | Strong Gaming & F&B;
ABOUT THE VENUE
Located in a busy metropolitan hub, this long-established venue attracts an incredibly broad customer base. You'll see local professionals dropping in after work, tradies and long-term regulars at the bar, families coming in for a meal, sports fans settling in for the game and a younger crowd bringing plenty of energy later in the week.
Understanding those different customers - and giving each of them a reason to come back - is a big part of what has made the venue successful.
It's a multifaceted operation incorporating multiple bars, a busy outdoor area, bistro, live sport, TAB, gaming and functions. Trade is strong, but importantly, there are still opportunities for the next GM to grow different areas of the business.
The venue is in excellent condition and already has a hardworking, energetic and settled team behind it.
The opportunity is to understand what already makes this pub tick, earn the trust of the team and regulars, and then find the opportunities to take an already successful operation another step forward.
THE ROLE - LEAD FROM THE FLOOR
This is definitely not a GM position for someone who wants to spend their week behind a laptop.
80% operational and 20% administrative.
You'll be visible across the venue - talking to customers, supporting the team, moving between the bars, bistro and gaming areas and understanding what's actually happening in the business. When it's busy, you're part of it.
You'll have overall responsibility for the venue's food & beverage, gaming/TAB, people, compliance and overall commercial performance, supported by an established team and experienced operational leadership above you.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Taking ownership of the day-to-day performance and presentation of the entire venue
- Leading, motivating and developing an established team
- Maintaining strong standards across liquor, gaming, security and general compliance
- Driving sales and identifying opportunities across beverage, food and gaming
- Managing rosters, staffing levels, labour and day-to-day operational costs
- Maintaining an understanding of the P&L; and taking responsibility for venue performance
- Working closely with kitchen and FOH leaders to continue developing the food offer
- Building genuine relationships with regulars while attracting new customers
- Working collaboratively with senior operations and taking responsibility when something needs fixing
- Creating an environment where good people want to stay, contribute and perform
You'll have support around stocktake and other group-level functions, plus access to experienced operators who understand pubs and are there to support you rather than micromanage you.
ABOUT YOU
You could already be a successful Licensee or General Manager. Equally, you might be a strong Assistant Manager, Venue Manager or 2IC who has been waiting for someone to back you and give you ownership of your own venue.
What matters is that you understand pubs and genuinely enjoy being in them.
You'll ideally bring a combination of food & beverage, gaming and compliance experience, along with the confidence and personality to lead a busy, multifaceted operation.
You'll probably describe yourself as someone who:
- Leads from the front and doesn't disappear into the office when things get busy
- Is energetic, hardworking and willing to pull their weight alongside the team
- Is a genuine people manager rather than a control freak
- Knows how to motivate, communicate and give good people room to do their jobs
- Is organised, accountable and follows things through
- Understands gaming and the compliance responsibilities that come with it
- Can comfortably deal with a broad mix of customers and personalities
- Understands labour, costs and the fundamentals of a venue P&L;
- Is customer-centric and enjoys being part of the community around a venue
- Brings an ownership mentality - if there's a problem, you take responsibility for getting it sorted
- Still genuinely loves hospitality
There's no need for ego here.
The successful person will be open-minded, approachable and able to earn the respect of an established team by working alongside them.
THE HOURS & PACKAGE
The roster rotates according to the needs of the business and will generally include a combination of opening, middle and closing shifts.
There's also a sensible approach to rostering. You'll obviously need to be there when the business needs you, but there's an understanding that good operators and their teams need balance as well.
The salary is flexible depending on experience, $110,000 - $130,000 + super
A hungry Assistant Manager, Venue Manager or 2IC with strong pub fundamentals, gaming exposure and the personality to lead could be every bit as engaging.
WHY THIS ROLE?
You're inheriting an established local operation with strong trade and a team that takes pride in the venue - but there are still genuine opportunities to improve performance and put your stamp on the business.
You'll have experienced operational support when you need it without someone constantly looking over your shoulder.
For a step-up candidate, it's an opportunity to finally be given ownership and prove what you can do.
For an established GM, it's an opportunity to get back to the things that make running a great pub enjoyable - customers, people, performance and pride in your venue.
If you're a hands-on pub operator who enjoys being part of the action, knows how to get the best out of people and wants a venue you can genuinely take ownership of, we'd like to hear from you.
