The chance to move out of consulting into an in-house People & Change seat that keeps the strategic and executive-facing muscle you've built. With genuine autonomy, direct GM HR partnership, and board-adjacent exposure from day one.
Melbourne CBD · up to $150k + super.
Who this role is built for
If you've spent the last 2–4+ years in the People & Change, Workforce Advisory, or HR Consulting practice of Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG, or one of the strategy houses (BCG, McKinsey, Bain, Accenture), and you're weighing up the move from consulting into an in-house seat that doesn't ask you to give up the strategic dimension, this role is worth a look.
Also open to in-house HR professionals who've been shaped by a change/transformation project cadence, and who partner regularly with executives on board-facing work.
About the opportunity
HeXTalent is partnering with a well-established Australian business, currently in a period of significant organisational change, to appoint into a strategic HR Business Partner seat in their Melbourne CBD head office. (We're advertising the role under a People & Change Partner framing because the shape of the seat aligns naturally with a consulting or in-house People & Change background — but the internal title is HR Business Partner, reporting to the General Manager HR.)
The organisation has a distributed workforce spanning corporate and operational teams across multiple Australian sites. It sits in a unique moment: a longstanding, well-established operation combined with a genuinely start-up mentality at head office as strategy, systems, and capability are built out for the next chapter.
The seat sits alongside an existing Regional HR Advisor team and a newly established HR Analyst & Systems Administration team.
The operational and data layers are carried by that supporting bench, freeing this seat to lead on strategy, change, executive partnership, and board work.
What the role actually involves
Reporting to the General Manager Human Resources, the shape of the work looks like this:
- Strategic HR partnership — supporting the GM HR on execution of the HR strategy; building trusted advisory relationships with leaders across the business; providing commercially-framed HR advice
- Change and transformation — partnering with the executive team on transformation initiatives; consultation and communication design; people impact and risk assessment
- Board reporting — preparing board-quality reports, insights, and papers on workforce metrics, remuneration, engagement, turnover, talent, and organisational change; supporting the preparation of remuneration and people-related papers for Board and Committee meetings
- Talent, capability and leadership — succession, capability, L&D; coordination, leadership development
- Commercial people work — remuneration reviews, benchmarking, salary analysis, STI framework administration
- ER support — providing advice on complex matters, coaching the Regional HR Advisors, ensuring compliance (the day-to-day ER caseload is handled by the regional bench, not this seat)
Some travel to operational sites is part of the rhythm. Openness matters more than frequency.
Ideal profile
Essential
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related discipline
- 2–4+ years' experience in a HR advisory or consulting role
- Strong stakeholder management and executive-facing communication muscle
- Strong knowledge of Australian employment and workplace relations legislation
- Excellent written communication — this is board-pack-drafting country
- Experience with HRIS, people analytics, and BI systems
Highly regarded:
- Postgraduate HR / Business qualification
- Time in top-tier consulting or advisory firms (Big 4 or strategy houses) in HR / People & Change / Transformation practices
- Prior experience preparing board or executive-committee decks on people matters
- Change management or transformation qualifications
- Prior operational or multi-site workforce exposure
Why consider this role if you're currently in consulting
- Genuine strategic seat with GM HR partnership from day one, you're not being hired to be a delivery arm
- Board-adjacent exposure is built into the role, not a "one day" promise
- Longstanding stable business with a start-up build mentality at head office, you get to build, without the start-up risk
- Trust-based flexible working workplace (2–3 days in office, flexed to what the week needs)
- Remuneration — up to $150k + super
- A supportive GM HR who genuinely wants a strategic partner, not a project resource
