The Mitochondrial Medicine and Biology Group at the University of Western Australia and the Kids Research Institute Australia are dedicated to understanding and manipulating complex biological systems to address fundamental scientific questions and real-world challenges. Role Description We offer two full-time, on-site Postdoctoral Researcher positions in protein engineering and mitochondrial biology based in Perth, WA. The roles involve designing and executing experiments to engineer proteins relevant to mitochondrial function, including cloning, expression, purification, and characterization of engineered constructs as well as bioinformatics analyses. The researchers will investigate mitochondrial pathways and dynamics, perform functional assays, and analyze data to uncover mechanisms and identify potential applications of the findings.
Day-to-day activities include planning and conducting laboratory work, maintaining accurate records, interpreting results, preparing manuscripts and presentations, and contributing to grant applications. The positions also entail collaborating with other researchers and potentially mentoring junior team members or students,
while adhering to laboratory safety and good research practices.
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess strong laboratory skills, including molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology techniques relevant to protein engineering and mitochondrial studies.
- Candidates should be proficient and willing to work with pre-clinical models.
- Candidates should possess research skills encompassing experimental design, hypothesis development, and rigorous documentation of methods and results.
- Candidates should possess physics and biophysics-related skills useful for understanding structural, energetic, or biophysical aspects of proteins and mitochondrial processes.
- Candidates should possess bioinformatic and data analysis skills, including statistical analysis, quantitative modeling, and proficiency with tools such as Python, R, or similar software.
- Candidates should possess teaching or mentoring skills to guide students or junior researchers and contribute to a collaborative learning setting.
- Experienced scientists with PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, or a related discipline is required, with demonstrated experience in protein engineering and mitochondrial biology.
- Strong scientific writing and communication skills, including experience preparing manuscripts, reports, and presentations, are highly beneficial.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, with organizational skills and attention to detail, is essential.
- Experience with advanced microscopy, omics approaches, or computational modeling related to mitochondria or protein structure-function is an advantage.
