Cubic Defence Australia is seeking an experienced technical leader to drive the technical vision, architecture and innovation roadmap for the Combat Training Centre-Live Instrumented Systems program. This role is responsible for ensuring technical solutions are innovative, customer-focused, aligned to business strategy and deliver superior value and return for customers and end users.
About the Role
Reporting into the CTC-LIS leadership structure, this position acts as the overall technical manager for CTC-LIS engineering, technical, project management and deep maintenance teams. The role will communicate the technical vision for the program, manage technical roadmaps and architecture, and support the delivery of innovative, performance-based training outcomes.
The successful candidate will be the gatekeeper for design reviews, provide the external interface for international technical engagement, lead the development and control of technology roadmaps, and ensure effective communication across the CTC-LIS technical leadership team.
Operating with limited supervision, this role requires sound judgement, robust technical authority and substantial decision-making capability.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead CTC-LIS engineering, technical, project management and deep maintenance teams to deliver technical solutions for the program.
- Contribute to CDAus management and ITS management activities to support optimum program outcomes.
- Liaise and coordinate with other Cubic engineering centres to ensure cohesion with CTC-LIS technical efforts.
- Ensure development of an obsolescence plan for CTC-LIS based on inputs from CDNZ.
- Lead customer-focused solutions across CTC-LIS proposals, innovation initiatives, technology roadmaps and projects.
- Support business development through technology road mapping and product management aligned to customer needs.
- Develop realistic technical refresh and managed services plans aligned with CTC-LIS and CDAus strategy and goals.
- Contribute to growth strategies as part of the CTC-LIS Leadership Team,
including organic growth, innovation, support and acquisition opportunities.
- Develop strategic technical business relationships with customers, partners and stakeholders.
- Manage the CTC-LIS innovation roadmap and process in support of continuous improvement and efficiency objectives.
- Lead project, innovation, technical refresh and managed services meetings, mentoring teams and coordinating effective communication between teams and senior management.
- Identify critical partnerships required to achieve innovation outcomes.
- Ensure alignment between engineering, project management, technical teams and other CTC-LIS departments.
- Lead special projects as assigned.
- Develop and maintain customer and partner relationships that support optimal engagement and return to the company.
People Leadership and Safety
- Undertake timely selection of replacement staff while fostering an environment that supports staff retention.
- Train, coach and develop team members to improve individual and organisational performance.
- Manage direct reports to ensure performance and development plans are regularly monitored in compliance with company processes.
- Provide ongoing performance feedback, guidance and coaching.
- Lead and establish a strong safety culture across the engineering team by following rules and procedures and promoting safe work practices.
- Actively contribute to and participate in company health and safety initiatives.

About You
You are a senior technical leader with deep engineering expertise, strong commercial acumen and a proven ability to lead complex, cross-functional teams. You can translate customer needs into practical technical roadmaps, influence stakeholders, guide engineering decision-making and deliver outcomes within cost, schedule and program constraints.
Qualifications
- Tertiary degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- An advanced engineering degree or commercial qualification is desirable.
Skills, Experience and Knowledge
- Minimum of twelve years’ related technical or engineering experience, including ten years in project engineering, project management, program management or supervisory responsibility.
- Experience with Commonwealth procurement processes.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams, communicate technical vision and develop technology and product roadmaps.
- Proven ability to analyse, design and implement efficient engineering business processes.
- Ability to work effectively under deadlines and within cost and schedule constraints.
- Strong capability to lead innovation, technical refresh, continuous improvement and managed services initiatives.
- Experience developing strategic technical business relationships with customers, partners and internal stakeholders.
Personal Qualities
You will bring excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills, with the interpersonal capability to engage effectively in sensitive, complex and commercially important situations.
Conditions of Employment
- Hold a current security clearance.
- Successful completion of a National Police Check.
