Zero Digital Sports

Cremorne

Zero Digital Sports is a dedicated 24/7 Australian sports news agency delivering high-quality sports coverage to fans locally and globally.

With a growing team of professional journalists across Australia, Zero Digital Sports produces premium Australian and international sports news, analysis, statistics, and opinions across major mastheads ZeroTackle.com (NRL) and ZeroHanger.com (AFL).

We're looking for a Sports Writing Intern to join our editorial team and gain hands-on experience working in a fast-paced digital sports newsroom. This is an opportunity to work alongside experienced editors and journalists, develop your writing and publishing skills, and see your work published to a national and international audience.

The role

As a Sports Writing Intern, you'll be involved in the day-to-day production of digital sports editorial content. You'll learn how a modern sports newsroom operates, from pitching and researching stories through to writing, editing and publishing content. Depending on your interests and skill set, you may also have opportunities to contribute to social media, video and other forms of digital content.

Key responsibilities

- Pitch timely and original story ideas to the editorial team
- Research and write news stories, features, explainers and other sports content
- Assist with the daily production and publishing of content
- Monitor the latest sports news, trends and conversations
- Work with editors to develop your writing and storytelling skills
- Contribute ideas during editorial meetings and planning sessions
- Assist with social media and other content distribution where required

- Learn how content is shaped for digital audiences, including headlines, SEO and audience engagement

About you

We're looking for someone with a genuine passion for sport and an interest in building a career in sports media or journalism. You don't need years of professional experience, but you should be curious, proactive and confident in your ability to tell a good story.

Ideally, you'll have:

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A strong understanding of, and genuine passion for, sport
- An ability to write clearly, accurately and to deadline
- A strong attention to detail
- A willingness to take feedback and continue developing your skills
- The ability to identify interesting stories and angles
- A good understanding of social media and the modern digital media landscape
- The ability to work independently while also collaborating with a wider editorial team

Experience with WordPress or other CMS platforms is a bonus, but not essential.

We're particularly interested in candidates who follow one or more sports closely and have opinions, ideas and stories they want to tell.

What you'll get from the internship

This isn't a role where you'll be sitting on the sidelines.

Successful interns will have the opportunity to contribute real work, receive feedback from experienced editors and journalists, and build a portfolio of published content.

You'll gain practical experience in:

- Digital sports journalism
- News and feature writing
- Story pitching and development
- Headline writing and audience-focused storytelling
- Content management and publishing
- SEO and digital publishing fundamentals
- Working to deadlines in a fast-paced editorial environment

Several interns who have previously worked with our wider team have gone on to secure paid and full-time roles in sports media and journalism.

Hours and location

We can be versatile around university and placement requirements.

The internship may be completed from our Melbourne (Cremorne, 3121) office, remotely, or through a hybrid arrangement depending on the successful candidate and the requirements of their course. Typically, internships are completed across 1–2 days per week, Monday through Friday, although this can be discussed and tailored around university placement requirements.

How to apply

If you're passionate about sport, love writing and want to get practical experience in a real digital sports newsroom, we'd love to hear from you.

Please apply via EMAIL to [email protected] and include:

- Your CV
- A short cover letter telling us why you're interested in sports journalism
- Examples of your writing, published work or a portfolio, if available

We are expecting a high volume of applicants for this role, with only shortlisted candidates to be contacted.
