About the volunteer role
Barayamal is seeking a volunteer Staff Software Engineer, Backend to contribute to practical technology work that supports First Nations entrepreneurs, volunteers and program participants.
You will work on clearly scoped backend engineering tasks matched to your skills and reasonable availability. The work is remote, adaptable and designed to be completed asynchronously in collaboration with other Barayamal volunteers.
What you may work on
- Design, build and maintain reliable backend services, APIs and integrations.
- Improve existing systems through bug fixes, performance work and maintainable code.
- Review code and contribute to testing, technical documentation and deployment practices.
- Help translate project needs into practical, appropriately scoped technical solutions.
- Share knowledge and collaborate respectfully with technical and non-technical volunteers.
- Support improvements that strengthen Barayamal’s programs and digital operations.
Preferred experience
- Two or more years of backend, Java, web development or equivalent project experience is preferred, but not essential.
- Experience with APIs, databases, Git, testing and collaborative development workflows.
- An understanding of software architecture,
security, reliability and maintainability.
- Clear written communication and the ability to work independently in a remote environment.
- Reliability, sound judgement and respect for First Nations-led work.
- An interest in social impact, Indigenous entrepreneurship or non-profit technology.
What success looks like
- Agreed tasks are completed to a clear and maintainable standard.
- Progress, risks and availability are communicated openly.
- Documentation and knowledge are shared so other volunteers can build on the work.
- Contributions remain aligned with Barayamal’s priorities and the agreed volunteer scope.
Location and availability
This role is remote within Australia. Applicants should currently live in Australia so collaboration, context and volunteer coordination can remain aligned with Barayamal’s Australian programs.
Volunteer terms
This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity, not paid employment. It does not involve fixed shifts, mandatory attendance, penalties for absence or a guaranteed volume of work. Tasks and time commitments are discussed and agreed around your reasonable availability.
