About the role
Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) is seeking a dedicated Lawyer to join our Gippsland team. As a Lawyer, you'll Provide high-quality legal services in the Gippsland region, with a primary focus on criminal law, with opportunities to also provide advice and representation to clients in the Family Violence practice area on an ad hoc basis.
You'll also advocate for our clients in various courts and tribunals and help improve access to justice for those who need it most. Travel to provide community outreach is part of the role, and we offer flexible working arrangements.
This role is based at either our Bairnsdale or Morwell offices on Gunai Kurnai Country.
About you
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:
- Ability to represent clients in criminal law matters in court.
- A current Australian practising certificate that entitles you to practise in Victoria as a government legal practitioner (mandatory).
- Entitled to practise in federal courts and courts exercising federal jurisdiction (entry on the High Court's Register of Practitioners).
- High-level interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with clients, staff, and external stakeholders, handling sensitive and complex issues.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to a supportive team setting and manage multiple priorities efficiently.
- Commitment to delivering high-quality legal services and ensuring clients receive the support they need.
