Job Description
The opportunity
n
This is a rare chance to bring institutional-grade investment leadership to a purpose that matters.
n
Aboriginal Investment NT is a corporate Commonwealth entity, established under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (Northern Territory) **** and designed in partnership with Aboriginal Territorians.
n
They manage grant funding and a growing investment corpus with a single goal: to deliver lasting economic, social and cultural outcomes for Aboriginal Territorians, guided by an Aboriginal-controlled Board and a shared vision of self-determination.
n
About the role
n
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you'll provide whole-of-function leadership across their commercial investment portfolio, Nation-Building Investments, investment governance, stakeholder relationships, capability development and performance reporting.
n
You won't need to be the principal technical expert in every discipline.
n
You will need the investment experience and commercial judgement to independently challenge technical advice, external managers and advisers coupled with the leadership to reduce key-person dependency and build sustainable Aboriginal investment leadership and professional pathways in the Territory.
n
What you'll do
n
Lead and coordinate the investment function across commercial and Nation-Building investments, governance, risk, performance and reporting
n
Build and develop a high-performing, multidisciplinary team with clear accountabilities and genuine succession planning
n
Provide executive oversight of the commercial portfolio including asset allocation, portfolio construction, external manager oversight, performance, liquidity, cost and risk
n
Provide executive oversight of Nation-Building and direct investments, ensuring proportionate due diligence against commercial, strategic, impact, cultural, governance and risk objectives
n
Maintain a whole-of-portfolio view of performance, valuation, concentration, counterparty exposure and emerging risk and elevate what matters, promptly
n
Ensure investment papers and performance reporting reaching decision-makers are accurate, evidence-based and decision-ready
n
Build trusted relationships with Aboriginal organisations, Traditional Owners, communities, government, co-investors, advisers and institutional partners
n
Develop Aboriginal investment capability, employment and succession pathways
n
About you
n
Substantial senior experience in institutional investment, funds management, banking, corporate finance, private capital, infrastructure investment or an equivalent commercial investment environment
n
A proven ability to lead a multidisciplinary investment or commercial function and integrate specialist advice into executive-level decisions
n
Strong commercial judgement and the credibility to independently test recommendations, financial analysis, portfolio advice and risk assessments, and to challenge external managers and advisers
n
Sound understanding of portfolio construction, investment risk, liquidity, valuation, performance measurement and investment governance
n
Experience overseeing or assessing direct debt, direct equity, private market or similar opportunities
n
A track record of high-quality advice and briefings to senior executives, Boards or Investment Committees
n
Governance and risk experience within a regulated, fiduciary, public-sector or similarly accountable setting
n
Strong stakeholder skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with Aboriginal organisations, Traditional Owners, communities and institutional partners
n
A genuine understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal people and a demonstrated commitment to Aboriginal self-determination, community-led development and culturally respectful engagement
n
Highly regarded
n
Experience in Aboriginal economic development, impact investment or Nation-Building investment
n
Knowledge of the Northern Territory and experience engaging with Aboriginal communities and organisations
n
Experience managing external fund managers, custodians, investment consultants and institutional service providers
n
Postgraduate qualifications or professional accreditation such as CFA, CPA, CA, MBA or GAICD
n
Why this role
n
Purpose with scale. Your commercial expertise translates directly into economic, social and cultural outcomes for Aboriginal Territorians.
n
Genuine influence. A senior seat at the executive table, advising an Aboriginal-controlled Board on strategy that shapes the organisation's long-term future.
n
A legacy, not just a portfolio. You'll help build enduring institutional capability and Aboriginal investment leadership pathways in the Northern Territory.
