Lead Software Engineer (C++ or/and Rust) | Autonomy Systems

We're working with a quick-growing Australian deep-tech company building autonomous systems and solving genuinely hard engineering problems.
n
They're looking for a Lead Software Engineer C++/Rust)to take ownership over the development of a new product through to production. This includes engineering initiatives spanning computer vision, state estimation and autonomy - from architecture through to field validation. This isn't a role sitting behind a spec; you'll be defining the system architecture, working closely with ML, control systems and hardware teams to build the backbone of an evolving product.

Comfortable leading complex, end-to-end engineering initiatives with a high degree of autonomy
n
Strong systems-level thinking and architectural design capability
n
Proven track record providing technical leadership across teams
n
Able to balance genuine hands-on delivery with strategic engineering direction
n

What you'll be doing
n
n
Leading the development of a novel product through to production
n
Working across ML, control systems and computer vision engineers to deliver robust, full-stack solutions
n
Defining and driving scalable software architecture for current product features and platform capabilities
n
Leading troubleshooting, testing, optimisation and technical decision-making during live field testing
n
Mentoring engineers through technical coaching, code reviews and day-to-day leadership
n
n
What you'll bring
n
n
8+ years of commercial software engineering, lead engineer experience is desirable
n
Strong experience in image processing, robotics, control systems, or an adjacent domain
n
A solid understanding of embedded vision systems and state estimation techniques - Kalman filtering, sensor fusion, GNSS integration, or similar probabilistic estimation methods
n
Hands-on Rust experience, or strong C++ with meaningful exposure to Rust
n
A track record of taking complex systems from prototype through to production
n
Deep understanding of performance optimisation at both the algorithmic and systems level
n
Comfortable working across embedded and Linux environments
n
n
Preferred background
n
A background in SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), robotics, or Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) is highly regarded - this role sits at the intersection of perception, estimation and autonomy, and candidates with genuine hands-on robotics or autonomous systems experience will be held in high regard
n
