The role
n
The Melbourne Environmental Division is seeking a full time Asbestos Identifier to join our Asbestos Team at our Springvale , Victoria laboratory.
n
This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team and develop into a future Team Leader .
n
The successful candidate will initially focus on hands-on asbestos identification and analysis while receiving ongoing mentoring, leadership development and support from the Laboratory Leadership Team and key stakeholders across the business.
n
For the right candidate, this role provides a clear pathway to take on increasing leadership responsibilities and help shape and lead the Asbestos section as their skills, experience and confidence develop.
n
The successful applicant will join a growing team responsible for the identification and analysis of asbestos in environmental and bulk material samples. They will also provide technical leadership, guidance and support to the Asbestos Team.
n
Key responsibilities
n
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
n
n
Perform asbestos identification using Polarised Light Microscopy (PLM) in accordance with AS ****, AS ****, ALS Quality Work Instructions (QWIs) and laboratory procedures.
n
Perform and assess asbestos fibre counting in accordance with applicable methodologies, maintaining high standards of analytical accuracy, technical competency and productivity.
n
Coordinate and prioritise daily workloads for the Asbestos Team to meet required turnaround times and client requirements.
n
Provide technical guidance, training, mentoring and competency development to Asbestos Identifiers, Fibre Counters and other laboratory staff.
n




Monitor analytical quality and quality control (QC) performance, identifying, addressing and escalating technical or quality issues as required.
n
Maintain accurate analytical, QC, training, competency and equipment records in accordance with ALS procedures.
n
Maintain the Asbestos Laboratory, equipment and resources in a clean, safe, organised and operational condition, including completing required equipment maintenance.
n
Communicate section workloads, performance, staffing and technical matters effectively to the Laboratory Manager.
n
Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality, productivity, efficiency and turnaround times.
n
Promote a strong safety, quality and team culture while supporting the ongoing development of a capable and appropriately trained Asbestos Team.
n
Perform any other duties consistent with the level and scope of the position.
n

About you
n
The successful candidate will possess the following:
n
n
An understanding of AS ****, AS ****, laboratory quality requirements and ISO/IEC ***** and NATA requirements.
n
Previous experience working in a NATA-accredited production laboratory.
n
Previous experience supervising, mentoring or coordinating a team.
n
NATA Endorsed Signatory status for relevant asbestos identification and/or fibre-counting activities, or a willingness to obtain this accreditation.
n
A relevant qualification in laboratory science, environmental science, microscopy,



asbestos analysis or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated technical experience.
n
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide explicit technical direction, work effectively within a team and communicate with stakeholders across the business.
n
Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with excellent planning, organisation and workload-prioritisation abilities.
n
A high level of attention to detail and a strong commitment to analytical quality and compliance.
n
Competence in Microsoft Office and laboratory information management systems.
n
The ability to work autonomously while contributing effectively to a team environment.
n
A positive and proactive approach to training, staff development and continuous improvement.
n
A strong commitment to laboratory safety and maintaining a positive HSE culture.
n

We are seeking an individual with well-developed communication, interpersonal, analytical and practical problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to manage and prioritize workloads in a high-throughput production laboratory.
