About Voconiq

Voconiq is a purpose-led Australian company helping organisations build stronger relationships with the communities and stakeholders around them.

Born from more than a decade of research at CSIRO, we combine social science, data and technology to help organisations understand what matters to the people affected by their activities, and how those relationships change over time.

We work with customers in Australia and internationally across a range of industries and contexts.

As we move from start up to scale-up and continue to grow, we are looking for an experienced Finance Manager to take ownership of our finance function and help us develop the systems, processes and financial insights we need for the future.

About the role

This is a hands-on, highly autonomous position and the most senior finance role in the business. Operating without a CFO, you will report directly to the Business Development Director (who is one of the three Voconiq Founders) and oversee our currently outsourced bookkeeping and accounting providers.

A core mandate of this role is transformation. While our current Excel-based financial model has served us well, it is becoming complex and is not fit for our next growth phase. You will evaluate our current tech stack, design a more modern and automated approach, and lead the implementation of fit-for-purpose finance software for modelling, forecasting, and reporting.

Beyond systems, you will maintain rigorous financial controls, support overseas expansion, ensure cross-border compliance, and act as a commercial partner to help the Leadership Team and Board understand what the numbers mean for the business.

We don’t have a predetermined solution in mind; part of the role will be understanding what we have, working out what we need, exploring the options available and then helping us implement and embed the right approach with your expertise and leadership.

What you’ll be doing

The role covers a broad range of finance responsibilities, including:

Systems & Process Modernisation

- Evaluating our existing financial models, software, and reporting tools to identify gaps and inefficiencies.

- Researching, proposing, selecting, and implementing modern, scalable finance technology to reduce manual effort.

- Establishing robust workflows for financial modelling, forecasting, and cash flow management.

Finance management and oversight

- Managing and coordinating our outsourced bookkeeping, accounting and other finance providers.

- Ensuring the absolute quality, accuracy and timeliness of all financial information.

- Maintaining appropriate internal controls and compliance frameworks as the business scales.

Financial operations and compliance

- Overseeing invoicing, accounts receivable, bill payments and cash management.

- Managing Australian tax, ATO, ASIC and broader corporate compliance.

- Coordinating international accounting, tax, and compliance requirements across our global operations.

Financial planning, modelling and reporting

- Managing cash forecasting, budgeting and financial planning.

- Preparing regular P&L;, cash flow, management accounts, and Board-level reporting.

- Monitoring actual performance against budgets and forecasts and identifying material variances or emerging issues.

Commercial analysis and decision support

- Developing and maintaining reporting on customer, market, and project profitability.

- Helping us better understand the drivers of financial performance across the business.

- Supporting investment decisions, pricing strategies, and ROI analysis.

- Providing financial analysis and advice to support decision-making.

- Partnering with operational teams and the Leadership Team to improve financial literacy and accountability.

An ideal candidate will bring:

- A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a related discipline.

- At least 5 years of relevant experience, ideally featuring exposure to a high-growth setting or a systems implementation project. Strong financial modelling, budgeting, and forecasting expertise (advanced Excel skills and experience with Xero are essential).

- Demonstrated autonomy and sound judgment, with the confidence to operate as the senior finance voice in the business.

- A curious, inquisitive systems-oriented mindset with a passion for leveraging technology to streamline finance operations. The judgement to know when you can work something through yourself and when specialist advice is needed.

- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate complex financial data for non-finance stakeholders.

- Experience working with international operations or multi-jurisdictional compliance will be highly regarded.

- Experience improving or implementing finance systems, reporting tools or automation would be useful, but isn’t essential. We’re more interested in someone who is curious about what is possible and can work through what will make sense for Voconiq.

Location

This role can be based in Brisbane or Melbourne, where we have our co-working offices at WeWork (310 Edward Street, Brisbane 4000) and The Commons (55 Collins st, Melbourne 3000) for in-person collaboration. Our work practices however are flexible and hybrid by design.

Why work at Voconiq?

- Flexible work arrangements: We’re committed to making work work for you, with the option to collaborate in the office or work from your home office in a flexible hybrid setting.

- Additional leave: Company shutdown leave between Christmas and New Year, plus the option to purchase extra annual leave.

- Employer-paid parental leave: 8 weeks for primary carer, 4 weeks for secondary carer.

- Work from anywhere: Option to work from overseas, based on role requirements.

- Career development: Regular feedback plus learning and development opportunities in a scale-up business.

- Team connection: Social events and an annual All Hands gathering to keep our team connected.

- Salary packaging: Salary sacrifice options for superannuation contributions and novated vehicle leasing.

A note on applying

We know great candidates don’t always tick every single box. Research also shows that people from underrepresented backgrounds are less likely to apply unless they meet every requirement.

We’re committed to diversity and believe that the unique perspectives and contributions of all our team members drive our success. We strongly encourage applications from women, people of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, those living with disabilities, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.

How to apply?

If this opportunity excites you and you think you could thrive at Voconiq, we’d like to hear from you. Tell us in your cover letter what you would bring to this role and why you are interested in working for Voconiq. Applications without a cover letter will not be considered.

We welcome applications via SEEK by September 24. We will kick off interviews as soon as suitable applications arrive, so please don't hesitate to reach out sooner rather than later if you are interested.
