Fortitude Valley

The Software Engineer is responsible for the design, development, testing, deployment and ongoing maintenance of the software systems that underpin Geoimage’s geospatial and Earth Observation (EO) services, its client-facing digital platforms, and its internal business operations. The role translates complex spatial data and commercial requirements into reliable, scalable and maintainable software.

The role spans four connected domains: geospatial data processing and automation; customer-facing web and portal platforms, including the automation of imagery ordering and fulfilment; internal business systems and tooling; and supporting IT infrastructure. The Software Engineer frequently operates as the sole engineer on a given system, carrying it from concept through to production and ongoing support.

The role applies critical thinking to solve technical problems, works effectively with limited supervision, and contributes to high-quality outcomes across data processing, analysis, product delivery and revenue-generating client services. It requires a strong commitment to software quality, security and attention to detail, and a willingness to continuously learn and adopt new tools and approaches, including the effective use of AI-assisted development tools.

Web Platform & Digital Product Development

- Develop and maintain the Geoimage website and associated digital products as a full-stack engineer, covering templating, front-end behaviour and responsive design.
- Build interactive, data-driven product and service experiences that communicate Geoimage’s technical capability to prospective clients.
- Manage deployment, environment configuration, caching and release processes across local, staging and production environments.
- Ensure accessibility, cross-browser compatibility, mobile responsiveness and page performance.

Software Development & Engineering

- Design, develop, test and maintain software systems that support Geoimage’s geospatial data processing, analytics and commercial delivery workflows.
- Apply structured problem-solving and critical thinking to complex technical challenges.
- Own solution architecture and technical design decisions for assigned systems, including technology selection, and document those decisions.
- Ensure software solutions are scalable, maintainable, secure and aligned with business requirements.
- Estimate, prioritise and sequence work across multiple concurrent workstreams, escalating conflicts where priorities compete.
- Take end-to-end ownership of systems from requirements through development, deployment and production support.
- Integrate third-party imagery supplier APIs

Client Portal & Imagery Commerce Platform

- Design, build and maintain Geoimage’s client-facing portal, including the automation of imagery ordering, purchasing and fulfilment.
- Implement commercial logic in software, including area-based pricing, minimum order thresholds, supplier cost and margin rules, discounting, currency handling and GST.
- Integrate payment processing and connect order data to invoicing, accounting and CRM systems so that orders flow through without manual re-entry.
- Automate the order lifecycle, with status visibility for both clients and internal staff.
- Maintain and improve the existing portal: resolve defects, prioritise by commercial impact, manage risk,

reduce technical debt and document inherited systems so they are supportable by more than one person.
- Design the portal’s geospatial user experience so that non-specialist clients can self-serve, including AOI drawing and validation, area calculation, footprint and preview rendering, and filtering by date, sensor and cloud cover.

Spatial Data & Technical Capability

- Work with spatial data concepts including raster and vector data, coordinate reference systems, projections and geospatial analysis workflows.
- Support the ingestion, processing, validation and output of large and complex spatial datasets.
- Build and maintain production geospatial pipelines, including format conversion and optimisation, elevation and terrain products, reprojection and derived product generation.
- Optimise processing performance and storage for large raster and vector datasets.
- Collaborate with geospatial specialists to ensure technical correctness and fitness for purpose of derived products.

Business Systems, Automation & Internal Tooling

- Develop and maintain integrations and automations across CRM, project management, marketing and document generation systems.
- Build internal tools that allow non-developer staff to perform technical tasks independently, including command-line utilities, configuration-driven pipelines, desktop GIS extensions and internal web applications.
- Design internal tools as maintainable, version-controlled, documented products rather than one-off scripts.
- Train and support colleagues in the use of internal tools, and gather feedback to guide improvement.
- Identify manual and repetitive business processes and propose automation opportunities.

IT Infrastructure & Systems Support

- Provide technical support to staff for hardware, software, accounts and connectivity issues.
- Administer and support internal infrastructure
- Contribute to infrastructure planning, including capacity assessment, hardware lifecycle, colocation and relocation planning, and phased cutover strategies designed to avoid service interruption.
- Evaluate and recommend infrastructure, networking and connectivity solutions, including validation testing against business requirements.

Quality, Testing & Reliability

- Demonstrate a solid commitment to testing
- Maintain automated test coverage over business-critical paths, particularly pricing, ordering, payment and data delivery.
- Verify integrations against sandbox and test environments before production release.
- Identify, diagnose and resolve software defects, performance issues and data inconsistencies.
- Maintain high standards of code quality, documentation and version control, with a defined release and rollback process.
- Implement monitoring, alerting and error handling on production systems, and respond to incidents affecting client-facing services within agreed expectations.

Security, Licensing & Data Governance

- Design systems so that payment and sensitive data are handled within a compliant architecture, using tokenised or hosted payment providers.
- Implement authentication, authorisation,

account management and organisation-level access controls for client-facing systems.
- Maintain logging, secure credential management and appropriate handling of client and commercial data.
- Apply secure development practices and address security issues in inherited code.

Use of Generative AI & Digital Tools

- Effectively use generative AI agents and AI-assisted development tools to support solution design, coding, testing and documentation.
- Apply professional judgement to validate AI-assisted outputs and ensure correctness, security and quality.
- Continuously explore new tools and techniques to improve development efficiency and solution quality.

Collaboration & Communication

- Work collaboratively with geospatial specialists, sales, operations, management and project stakeholders.
- Elicit and clarify requirements directly from business stakeholders and translate them into technical solutions.
- Clearly communicate technical concepts, limitations and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Provide technical input to client-facing activities, including demonstrations, webinars and proposals.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing, documentation and continuous improvement across the organisation.

Key Skills & Experience

Essential

- Strong software engineering skills with experience developing and maintaining production-quality software.

- Full-stack web development capability, including server-side and front-end development within a content management or application framework.

- Experience integrating third-party APIs and building reliable interfaces between systems.

- Proficiency in Python and JavaScript, with sound version control practice.

- Sound understanding of spatial data concepts and geospatial workflows.

- Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking and structured problem-solving.

- Strong commitment to testing, quality assurance and attention to detail.

- Ability to work effectively with limited supervision, manage competing priorities and take ownership of systems end to end.

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable

- Experience working with geospatial, remote sensing or Earth Observation data.

- Familiarity with satellite imagery, analytics pipelines or derived geospatial products.

- Experience building transactional or e-commerce systems, including payment integration and order management.

- Experience with CRM and business automation platforms.

- Exposure to infrastructure, networking or systems administration.

- Interest or experience in machine learning and computer vision applied to imagery.

- Experience working in small to mid-sized technical organisations.

The role currently works across the following environment, which is expected to evolve:
