Primary objective
Manage the development, implementation and sustainability of strategies for improving Medication Safety and quality use of medicines
in Central Australia (CAR) and Barkly Regions (BR) by ensuring safe and effective medication management systems are in place.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide secretariat duties for the Quality Use of Medicines (QUM) Committee, including provision of regular reports to CAR executive

regarding progress of medication safety initiatives being undertaken within CAR and BR.
2. Co-ordinate the development and review of medication-related policy, protocol and guideline documents.

Undertake quality improvement activities including regular audits and monitor performance against National Safety and Quality

Health Service (NSQHS) standards for medication safety.
4. Review medication incidents occurring in Alice Springs and Tennant Creek hospitals, identify trends, provide recommendations for

system level improvements to the QUM Committee and communicate medication safety alerts to staff members.
5. Undertake role of the pharmacy clinical champion for electronic medication management systems, provide ongoing education and

training to clinical staff, and regularly review quick lists and protocols, and co-ordinate feedback.
6. Undertake role of the pharmacy clinical champion for medication devices, such as smart infusion pumps, maintain contemporary drug

libraries and software updates, and manage change requests.
7. Provide line management, training and supervisory support to pharmacy staff, including being a Pharmacy Resident Preceptor, and

undergo regular performance management and professional development for self.
8. Take an active role in the senior pharmacy leadership team, provide clinical pharmacy services in accordance with departmental

guidelines to nominated areas and contribute to the weekend, on-call and after hour’s roster as required
9. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in

order to ensure high quality, secure services and workplaces.
10. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.

Selection criteria
Essential
1.



A degree or equivalent in Pharmacy and registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia
2. Extensive contemporary clinical pharmacy experience (preferably in Medication Safety) and demonstrated ability to maintain currency

of clinical knowledge
3. Excellent negotiation and communication skills, and ability to work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team.
4. Practical understanding and experience in the implementation of the NSQHS standards and the national accreditation scheme for

health service organisations.
5. Demonstrated experience in applying continuous quality improvement and managing change in the clinical environment.
6. Proven capacity to coordinate clinical pharmacy services, manage staff and be eligible as a Foundations Resident Preceptor.
7. Extensive experience in the development of protocols, guidelines and policies, and provision of continuing education to healthcare

staff and patient groups.
8. Proficiency in using Information Technology in clinical settings including substantial knowledge and experience with the use of

electronic medication management systems in acute care settings.
9. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
Desirable
• Postgraduate qualifications or research in clinical pharmacy, public health, education, or safety and quality.
