About the Neurology department

The Department of Neurology at Austin Health is one of the largest neurology services in Victoria and is recognised for delivering comprehensive, high-quality neurological care. Its Movement Disorders program has an established reputation for excellence in diagnosis and management of a broad range of movement disorders. The program also encompasses a large Surgical Movement Disorders service, offering advanced therapies including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and MR-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS) for appropriately selected candidates. The Department of Neurology forms part of the Division of Specialty Medicine.

About the role

The surgical Movement Disorders Consultant will provide expert subspecialty care for patients undergoing surgical treatment for movement disorders, including Parkinsons Disease, Essenial Tremor and Dystonia.

The position will deliver comprehensive peri procedural care and ongoing long-term management before and after treatment, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. The Surgical Movement Disorders Consultant will play a key role in delivering high-quality patient-centred care, optimising clinical outcomes, and contributing to the continued development of the Surgical Movement Disorders Service.

A regular day will see you:
Provide expert subspecialty assessment, evaluation and ongoing clinical management of patients with movement disorders being considered for, or undergoing, DBS and MRgFUS
Provide ongoing longitudinal follow-up and specialist management of patients following DBS and MRgFUS, including optimisation of clinical outcomes, monitoring treatment response and adverse effects, adjustment of medical therapy in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, and coordination of long-term care

You will be someone who has excellent communication skills, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. You’ll bring energy and drive to your work and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.

To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:
Be a Consultant Neurologist with subspecialty expertise in movement disorders and have completed a Fellowship in Movement Disorders
Expertise in the use of advanced therapies (particularly DBS and MRgFUS) for movement disorders, including patient selection, pre-procedural and longitudinal management
