The Orthopaedic Institute (TOI) at Macquarie University Hospital is seeking Registered Nurses who are dual trained in Anaesthetics and Post-Anaesthetic Care (PACU) to join our perioperative team, based at Macquarie University, Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde. The Orthopaedic Institute delivers a high-quality elective orthopaedic service, including joint replacement, spinal, arthroscopic and robotic-assisted procedures.

We are specifically seeking nurses who hold both anaesthetic and recovery skill sets and are comfortable working across both areas. This dual capability allows our team to flex with the demands of the list and provides you with genuine variety across the perioperative journey — from pre-operative preparation and anaesthetic induction through to emergence, recovery and safe discharge from PACU. Both permanent part-time and casual positions are available, and we are genuinely flexible on hours and days. Whether you are looking for a set part time pattern, a smaller number of regular shifts, or casual work that fits around other commitments, we would welcome a conversation.

Reporting to the Nurse Unit Manager – Pre-Operative, Anaesthetics and PACU, you will be well supported by an experienced team of anaesthetists, surgeons and perioperative nursing colleagues.

Key areas of responsibility

- Providing skilled anaesthetic nursing assistance during induction, maintenance and emergence, in collaboration with the anaesthetist and surgical team
- Preparing and checking anaesthetic equipment, airway adjuncts, monitoring and emergency drugs in accordance with policy and procedural requirements
- Delivering safe, timely post-anaesthetic recovery care, including airway management, haemodynamic monitoring, pain and nausea management,

and recognition of clinical deterioration
- Assessing and preparing patients pre-operatively, and applying discharge criteria to safely transfer patients from PACU to the ward or day surgery

As a dual-trained Anaesthetic and PACU Registered Nurse, you will provide safe, evidence-based perioperative care to patients across their surgical episode, moving between the anaesthetic bay, operating theatre and recovery unit as required. Your ability to work across both scopes will be central to how safely and efficiently our orthopaedic lists run, and to how supported our patients feel at some of the most vulnerable points of their care.
