Substation Testing and Commissioning Engineer
Location: Hobart, Tasmania (with project travel across Australia)
Megavar is a specialist high voltage engineering firm delivering testing and commissioning, primary and secondary design, and substation maintenance for network businesses, generators and renewable energy developers across Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. We’re not a division of a large multidisciplinary consultancy — HV is all we do, and that focus means our engineers take on real site responsibility earlier than they would in a larger organisation.
We’re looking for a Substation Testing and Commissioning Engineer to join our commissioning team. We’re open on experience level: whether you have a few years of solid site commissioning behind you and are ready to step up, or you’re a senior engineer capable of leading commissioning on major projects, we want to hear from you — the role, title and package will be shaped around what you bring.
What You’ll Be Doing
•Primary and secondary commissioning of transmission and distribution substations, BESS and renewable energy projects across Australia.
•Testing and validating protection, control and SCADA systems against design specifications, Australian standards and client requirements — predominantly using Omicron test equipment.
•Fault-finding and resolving technical issues during commissioning, and working with design teams and clients to close them out.
•Preparing and maintaining commissioning documentation: test plans, test records, ITPs and commissioning reports.
•Working alongside our primary design, protection and SCADA teams on multidisciplinary HV projects.
•Liaising directly with clients, contractors and network operators on technical issues and problem resolution.
•For senior candidates: leading test teams on site, managing commissioning programs end to end, and mentoring less experienced engineers.
What We’re Looking For
•A degree or diploma in electrical or power engineering, or a related discipline.
•At least 3 years’ hands-on experience commissioning HV electrical systems — substations, protection and control, renewables or BESS. Senior candidates should be able to demonstrate leading commissioning on major transmission or renewable energy projects.
•A strong understanding of protection and control systems, power systems and the relevant Australian standards.
•Proficiency with secondary injection test sets and diagnostic equipment — Omicron experience is well regarded.
•Willingness to travel and work at project sites across Australia.
•The discipline to keep test records, documentation and deadlines tight on client-facing work.
•Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
•A current driver’s licence.
Why Megavar
•Direct exposure to senior HV engineers and real site responsibility, without the layers of a large multidisciplinary firm.
•A genuinely wide-ranging caseload — commissioning across transmission, distribution, BESS and renewables projects for clients including ElectraNet, TasNetworks, Downer, Zinfra, Acciona, Vestas and Goldwind.
•Structured support toward Chartered Engineer / CPEng status.
•Flexible working arrangements, based in our Hobart office as part of a close-knit team spanning Hobart, Launceston, Adelaide and Newcastle.
•Relocation assistance available for the right candidate moving interstate.
•An attractive salary package benchmarked to your experience, with genuine opportunities for progression.
