About the role
An opportunity is available for an experienced Principal Governance Officer to support strategic planning, performance, risk management, and governance functions within a large Queensland Government business area. This role works closely with senior leaders to provide high-level governance advice, drive continuous improvement and ensure alignment with legislative, policy and whole‑of‑government requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve strategic planning, performance, risk management, and governance frameworks in line with legislative requirements, ISO standards and government expectations
- Provide governance oversight across business governance activities including internal audit, legal matters, Right to Information and insurance processes
- Provide high-quality advice to executives and staff on contemporary best practice in governance, planning, risk and audit
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to strengthen strategic and operational planning, performance management and governance practices
- Research and prepare complex reports, submissions, briefs and papers for senior leaders and governance committees
- Build and maintain effective working relationships across internal business areas, central agencies and external stakeholders
- Embed a positive, risk-aware culture by facilitating governance discussions, workshops, and communities of practice
- Lead strategic projects that support governance obligations
- Establish and maintain governance tools, resources and capability‑building frameworks
About you
- High-level knowledge and practical experience in planning, performance, risk management, and governance
- Government experience within governance, risk management, planning, and risk controls is highly desirable
- Robust strategic, analytical, and problem-solving capability with the ability to deliver clear, well‑reasoned advice at a senior level
- Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships across all levels of government and with external stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, and deliver outcomes in a complex and changing setting
- Strong capability in driving accountability, supporting team capability, and modelling ethical and professional behaviour
