Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and energetic Applications Engineer to join our growing team based at our Victoria branch in Melbourne. Reporting to Lead Applications/Tendering Manager, this senior is focused on driving the end-to-end bid and proposal process, and actively engaging in technical sales. Working closely with Area Sales Managers, you will participate in client clarification meetings, architect technical solutions, and manage vendor inputs.
While this position does not execute post-award projects directly, you will collaborate closely with Project Managers during handover to ensure a seamless transition. The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background, a deep understanding of pre-sales principles, and experience strategically engaging OEMs, EPCs, and end-users to grow AFH’s engineering capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Sales & Customer Support
- Sales Team Collaboration: Work closely with Area Sales Managers (ASMs) to understand customer requirements, develop appropriate technical solutions, and support the sales process.
- Technical Customer Engagement: Participate in technical clarification meetings, customer presentations, tender discussions, and meetings with consultants and end users.
- Technical Solution Development:
Act as a technical point of contact during the pre-sales phase, interpreting customer specifications and developing practical, compliant engineering solutions.
- Technical Clarifications: Respond to customer technical queries and coordinate internally to ensure accurate and timely responses.
- Applications Engineering & Proposal Support
- Proposal Preparation: Prepare high-quality technical and commercial quotations in accordance with customer requirements, project specifications, and company standards.
- Technical Evaluation: Review customer specifications, datasheets, drawings, and tender documents to identify technical requirements, exclusions, deviations, and potential risks.
- Equipment Selection: Select and configure appropriate equipment and systems based on the required duty, operating conditions, technical specifications, and applicable standards.
- Vendor & OEM Coordination: Liaise with OEMs, sub-vendors, and suppliers to obtain technical information, pricing, lead times, and supporting documentation.
- Costing & Scope Review: Support accurate costing and scope definition, identify technical and commercial gaps, and highlight risks or assumptions prior to quotation submission.
- Technical Documentation: Prepare and review datasheets, technical schedules, compliance statements, equipment selections, and other documentation required for tenders and quotations.
- Project Handover & Technical Support
- Project Handover: Support the formal handover of awarded projects to Project Managers (PMs), ensuring all technical requirements, assumptions, deviations, and commitments are clearly communicated.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with PMs,
engineering, procurement, and other internal teams to resolve technical matters and ensure alignment between the proposal and project execution.
- Technical Advisory: Provide ongoing technical support to PMs during project commencement and early-stage engineering where required.
- Technical Continuity: Assist in resolving technical issues arising from the original proposal and ensure the delivered solution remains aligned with the quoted scope and customer requirements.
- Quality, Compliance & Continuous Improvement
- Compliance Verification: Ensure proposed equipment, designs, datasheets, and technical solutions comply with customer specifications, applicable standards, and company requirements.
- Risk Identification: Identify technical risks, specification gaps, deviations, and potential project issues during the application and proposal stage and escalate them appropriately.
- Quality Assurance: Maintain a high standard of accuracy and quality across all technical submissions, quotations, calculations, and customer documentation.
- Continuous Improvement: Contribute to improving application engineering processes, technical standards, templates, and lessons learned.
- IMS Compliance: Participate in Integrated Management System (IMS) activities, audits, procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (or better) in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, or similar).
- 5+ years’ experience in project execution in Oil & Gas or associated industries.
- Proficiency in understanding rotating equipment, pumping systems, compressors, and chemical injection packages. Familiarity with API 610, API 685, and API 675 standards is a must.
- Proven ability to manage complex projects and negotiate technical/commercial solutions.
