Canberra | Federal Government ICT
PALAS Consulting is seeking experienced ICT practitioners for engagements with Federal Government clients in Canberra across three areas: enterprise and security architecture, network engineering, and systems administration. Our clients are large, security-conscious agencies within the Australian Government, and the work described below reflects what they ask of us. Apply against the area that fits you, and we will be in touch to discuss the engagements that suit your experience.
Enterprise and Security Architecture
Our architecture work sits at the enterprise and solution level within large Federal Government agencies, and increasingly it carries a security dimension. Architects in our network are asked to define target states for identity, cryptographic and secure integration services, advise on the design and operation of public key infrastructure, and support procurement by reviewing requirements, evaluating responses and shaping transitions between service providers. The best fit is an architect who can hold a technical position with a vendor and explain the same position to an executive.
We are interested in practitioners with:
- Enterprise or solution architecture experience in a Federal Government agency, with a framework such as TOGAF applied in practice rather than cited.
- Depth in one or more of cryptography, PKI, identity and access management, or secure integration, and familiarity with the ISM controls that apply.
- Experience contributing to RFQ or RFT processes from the buyer's side, whether writing requirements or evaluating responses.
- Involvement in a vendor or service transition, including the architecture decisions that make an exit safe.
Network Engineering
Network engineers in our network work alongside agency architects to turn approved designs into infrastructure that stays up. The work spans enterprise routing,
switching, firewalls and load balancing, and our clients increasingly expect a platform engineering approach: configuration under version control, automated deployment and testing, and documentation a peer could operate from. An engineer who will challenge a design when the build reveals a problem is more useful to us than one who builds exactly what the drawing says.
We are interested in practitioners with:
- Five or more years in enterprise network engineering, preferably in an Australian Government or Defence workplace.
- Hands-on depth in at least one major vendor platform (Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet or comparable).
- Automation and infrastructure-as-code practice, for example Ansible, Terraform or Python, applied to network platforms.
- A current professional-level vendor certification (CCNP or equivalent) is an advantage.
Systems Administration
Systems Administrators in our network maintain Windows and Linux server environments inside secure Federal Government networks: Active Directory, virtualisation, patching, backup, monitoring and escalated user support. Patching and hardening are measured against the Essential Eight and, as agencies transition, ASD's new Essentials series, and changes follow a formal ITIL process. Positions in this area span a range of seniority levels, so we welcome applications from administrators at different stages of their careers.
We are interested in practitioners with:
- Three or more years administering Windows Server and Active Directory, with Linux administration an advantage.
- Experience with VMware or Hyper-V, enterprise backup tools and monitoring platforms.
- Familiarity with the Essential Eight maturity model, the ISM and ASD's incoming Essentials series as they apply to server administration.
- An ITIL Foundation certification or equivalent operational experience.
Eligibility
- Australian citizenship is mandatory.
- Current AGSVA security clearance.
- Based in Canberra, or willing to work on-site in Canberra for the majority of each working week.
Location and Working Arrangements
Engagements are Canberra-based. On-site attendance is the norm, with any hybrid arrangement at the discretion of the client agency.
