ANZBIG is seeking an experienced, independent Chair to help guide the next stage of growth for the biochar industry across Australia and New Zealand.

The Australia and New Zealand Biochar Industry Group (ANZBIG) is the peak industry body working to position biochar as a credible, investable and scalable solution across Australia and New Zealand. As a member-led, not-for-profit organisation, ANZBIG brings together government, industry, researchers and land managers to align policy, strengthen standards, and accelerate market development. Its strategic value lies in providing the coordination the sector needs to move from fragmented activity to a high-integrity industry capable of delivering climate, agricultural and circular economy outcomes at scale.

For board members, ANZBIG represents more than an advocacy platform; it is a vehicle for shaping the regulatory, commercial and institutional conditions required to unlock long-term sector growth and regional leadership in biochar innovation.





Role Purpose The Board Chair provides leadership to the board and supports effective governance of the organisation. The role is responsible for guiding the board’s work, promoting constructive decision-making, maintaining robust governance standards, and fostering a productive relationship with the Chief Executive Officer (or equivalent senior executive). The Chair also represents the board to key stakeholders, while ensuring the board remains focused on strategy, oversight, risk, and organisational performance.

Time Commitment

Attendance at monthly board meetings (2 hours per meeting)

Participation in committee meetings as required (1 hour per meeting)

Preparation time, event attendance and occasional out of session engagement

Participation in annual Strategy meetings (in person) (1 day per year)

Approx 4 hrs per week averaged across a month
