Overview of role:
Coliban Water is seeking an experienced Legal Advisor to provide specialist legal advice and support to our Rural Water Efficiency Project (RWEP).
Reporting to the General Counsel, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the project’s activities are legally robust, procedurally compliant and effectively manage legal and regulatory risk.
A core focus of the role will be supporting the Water Act 1989 (Vic) Part 7A reconfiguration program, as well as providing practical legal advice across statutory processes, regulatory compliance, governance, contracts, procurement and commercial matters.
Key Responsibilities:
As Legal Advisor – RWEP, you will:
- Provide specialist advice on the interpretation and application of the Water Act 1989 (Vic), particularly Part 7A reconfiguration requirements.
- Support the development and delivery of legally compliant reconfiguration processes, including statutory notices, consultation and decision-making requirements.
- Identify and manage legal, regulatory, governance and commercial risks across the project.
- Draft and review legal instruments, contracts, agreements, tenders, notices and other project documentation.
- Provide practical advice on contracts, procurement, regulatory compliance and governance matters.
- Advise on stakeholder consultation requirements and the management of objections, appeals and disputes.
- Work closely with the General Counsel, RWEP teams, senior leaders, regulators and specialist external legal providers.
- Support negotiations, dispute resolution and other legal matters affecting the project.
About you:
To be successful, you will have:
- Tertiary qualifications in Law and a current unrestricted Australian practising certificate.
- Relevant experience gained within a corporate law firm or in-house legal setting, ideally within a highly regulated sector.
- Strong experience providing practical and strategic legal advice.
- Knowledge and experience across contracts, regulatory compliance, governance, procurement and commercial matters.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence, negotiate and build trusted relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
Experience within water operations and/or civil construction will be highly regarded.

Salary:
The salary and conditions for this position will be as per the Coliban Water Enterprise Agreement 2021 Band 5 $115,162 - $143,967 plus superannuation salary range will be offered to the successful candidate commensurate with their skills and experience.
