Becoming an Aged Care Volunteer Visitor can be an incredibly rewarding experience.

The Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS) is an Australian Government-funded program that aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness and increase social connection for older people in our community.

Older people can be particularly vulnerable to social isolation, especially when they have limited contact with family, friends or their wider community. Our volunteer visitors play an important role in providing regular friendship, companionship and connection.

For as little as one hour per fortnight, you can make a world of difference to someone’s life.

Our recipients come from many different backgrounds and have a wide range of interests. We carefully match volunteers with an older person in their local area, taking into account interests, preferences, personality and compatibility.

Many of our volunteers find that they get just as much from the relationship as they give, with both volunteers and older people benefiting from genuine friendship and connection.

What do volunteer visitors do?

- Provide regular companionship and social connection to an older person living in a residential aged care home or receiving an eligible Home Care Package in their own home.
- Commit approximately one hour per fortnight, ideally for at least six months, to allow a genuine and consistent friendship to develop.
- Spend time together in a way that suits you both. Visits might involve having a cuppa and a chat, listening to music, going for a walk, gardening, playing games, attending a local activity or simply enjoying each other’s company.
- Face-to-face visits are preferred wherever possible, with other forms of communication able to complement regular visits when appropriate.

- A National Police Check at no cost to you.
- Appropriate volunteer insurance while undertaking your role.

- Opportunities for additional training, volunteer recognition and events through Northern Rivers Community Gateway.

Important requirements

- You must be 18 years of age or over.
- You will need to complete the required ACVVS onboarding and induction training.
- You will need to complete a National Police Check, which is arranged and paid for by us.
- We ask that volunteers are reliable and able to commit to regular fortnightly visits.
