What you'll do

As the Scientist Pathology, you will apply your scientific knowledge, technical expertise, and professional judgement to perform routine and complex pathology testing, ensuring the accurate analysis, verification, and validation of patient results. Working within Chemical Pathology, you will provide specialist scientific advice and high-quality services to Cairns Hospital and external clients, contributing to the delivery of safe and effective patient care. You will review and interpret analytical results in conjunction with clinical information, apply increasingly independent judgement to complex diagnostic issues, and collaborate closely with clinicians, health professionals, and laboratory colleagues to achieve optimal outcomes. In addition, you will contribute to the development of laboratory practices, procedures, and protocols, participate in quality and service improvement initiatives that support NATA/RCPA accreditation and ISO certification, and, where required, represent the laboratory through discipline working groups. You will also play an important role in fostering a culture of learning by providing training, education, and supervision to less experienced staff and students while supporting continuous improvement and excellence in pathology service delivery.

About you

We are searching for someone who has:

- Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) or equivalent qualification.
- Knowledge of Chemical Pathology testing and its role in clinical medicine.

- Proven ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative in problem solving and innovative solutions.

- Proven ability to participate in a team of professional staff to ensure the delivery of a high-quality testing service.
- Good communication and negotiation skills with staff at all levels in a large organisation.
