Selection Criteria

KSC1 Demonstrated experience managing facilities, buildings, grounds, assets and maintenance programs in a complex environment, including the ability to work collaboratively with the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) and support large-scale building, restoration, relocation or capital works projects

KSC2 Demonstrated knowledge of relevant OHS, essential services, contractor induction, child safety and compliance requirements, with the ability to identify risks, maintain accurate records and ensure appropriate follow-up actions are completed.

KSC3 Demonstrated project management capability, including the capacity to coordinate staff, contractors and service providers, prepare scopes of work, manage timelines, monitor delivery against agreed standards

KSC4 Demonstrated high-level communication, initiative and practical problem-solving skills, including the ability to provide advice to school leadership, liaise professionally with staff, contractors and external partners, and exercise sound judgement with limited day-to-day supervision.

Role

The Facilities Manager is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day operation, maintenance, safety and presentation of the School¿s buildings, grounds and physical assets. As an ES 1-4 position, the role operates with a high level of independence within school policies and procedures, providing practical advice to school leadership on maintenance priorities, compliance, contractors and facilities risks.

Melbourne High School is a heritage-listed campus requiring careful stewardship of significant buildings and grounds. The role also includes facilities-related oversight and attendance at the School¿s Millgrove campground as required, and liaison with CHES on facilities and project-related matters. In 2027, the School will undertake a major restoration and relocation project, with the Facilities Manager supporting operational planning, project coordination, contractor access, site readiness, asset protection, timelines, stakeholder communication and continuity of school operations during the transition.

Attendance during school holiday periods is required.

Occasional travel to Warburton and occasional weekend work may also be required to meet operational, project or emergency needs.

Responsibilities
Facilities, Maintenance and Asset Management

- Lead planning and oversight of facilities, buildings, grounds, campgrounds and asset management activities.

- Prioritise maintenance and capital works based on risk, operational needs and budget, in partnership with the Business Manager and Assistant Principal.

- Manage preventative maintenance, inspections, work requests, records and rectification processes in line with Department and school requirements.

Heritage Stewardship
- Ensure works are undertaken with appropriate regard for the School¿s heritage-listed status.

- Coordinate with specialists, consultants, contractors and authorities where works may affect heritage fabric or character.

- Support practical solutions that balance operational needs, preservation obligations and long-term asset sustainability.

Safety, Compliance and Risk
- Coordinate facilities operations in line with Department OHS standards, WorkSafe requirements, essential services, building, environmental and school policies.

- Undertake inspections, risk assessments and follow-up actions across buildings and grounds, maintaining accurate records in AIMS.

- Support the Assistant Principal as a key contributor to the OH&S; Committee, emergency management planning and response, including Fire Warden responsibilities.

- Ensure contractors meet induction, secure work, insurance and child safety requirements.

Contractor, Team and Service Management
- Provide direction, oversight and task allocation to maintenance staff, cleaners, casual facilities officers, service providers and contractors.

- Coordinate the selection,



engagement and oversight of trades and contractors unless otherwise delegated.

- Prepare scopes of work, obtain quotes, coordinate project milestones and monitor contractor delivery against agreed standards, budgets, timelines and scope.

Key Capabilities
- Sound judgement, initiative and practical problem-solving in a busy school environment.

- Ability to coordinate competing priorities, allocate tasks, work with limited supervision and escalate matters appropriately.

- Clear communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with school leadership, staff, contractors, external partners and CHES.

- Capacity to support project management activities involving heritage considerations, operational continuity, temporary relocation logistics and off-site facilities such as Millgrove.

Desirable Experience
- Experience in facilities, property, maintenance or operations management, preferably in a school or complex environment.

- Qualified builder or equivalent building trade qualification.

- Experience coordinating contractors, minor works, refurbishments, relocations or capital works projects, including planning, scheduling and delivery oversight.

- Familiarity with heritage-listed buildings and/or relocation, decanting or site transition planning.

- Proficiency in AIMS, maintenance systems, asset registers, essential safety measures, contractor documentation, compliance records and procurement documentation.

Location Profile

Melbourne High School is a State Government high school for boys in years 9 to 12 with a current enrolment of 1404. Opening in 1905 it was Victoria¿s first state secondary school and moved to its current site in South Yarra in 1927. It is one of four academic select entry Government schools in Victoria. Entry is by an examination in year 8, with a small Principal Discretionary Category. Boys from any school in the state, or outside Victoria, may seek admission. There is also a smaller intake by application and interview at years 10 and 11.

Students in years 9 and 10 undertake a course of core subjects (English, mathematics, science, history, geography, physical education, art, music, and languages ¿ Indonesian, Japanese, French and German) and have a choice of electives. An extensive range of VCE studies across all learning areas is offered to students in years 11 and 12. A health and personal development course also operates at all levels.

The school places special emphasis on its co-curricular program. Years 9 and 10 students spend a week at the Outdoor Education Centre at Millgrove in the Yarra Valley. Sport is compulsory at all levels. The music and drama programmes are extensive and include the house choral competition in March, Winter Concert, musical and drama productions (generally conducted in cooperation with the MacRobertson Girls¿ High School) and the whole school Speech Night at the end of the year. Students are also encouraged to form their own special interest clubs. There are many opportunities for student leadership at all levels.

In addition to government funding the School seeks voluntary contributions from parents.
