About the Business
Our client is a Sydney-based civil engineering and principal contracting firm specialising in complex civil construction, bulk & detailed excavation, structural demolition, and environmental land remediation. Known for their extensive up-to-date fleet of heavy machinery and strong track record on major infrastructure projects—including landmark Sydney Metro station and key airport precinct developments—they deliver end-to-end site solutions across commercial, industrial, and infrastructure sectors.
Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of upcoming works, they are seeking a highly experienced and commercially driven Lead Estimator to join our Sydney team.

About the Role
Reporting to the Preconstruction Manager, the Lead Estimator will oversee the preparation, submission, and negotiation of tenders ranging from early-stage bulk earthworks and deep excavations to complex remediation and civil works packages. You will serve as the technical and commercial expert during the pre-construction phase, ensuring all estimates are accurate, competitive, and profitable.

Key Responsibilities

- Tender Management: Lead first-principles estimating for tenders covering civil construction, bulk/detailed earthworks, shoring, demolition, and site remediation packages.
- Measurement & Costing: Perform detailed quantity take-offs, interpret engineering drawings/geotechnical reports, and build first-principles cost models.
- Vendor & Subcontractor Engagement: Issue enquiries, analyse subcontractor quotes, and negotiate competitive pricing for materials, specialist plant, and trade packages.
- Risk & Opportunity Analysis: Identify project risks, methodology challenges,



and constructability opportunities to maximize win probability and margin protection.
- Client & Stakeholder Collaboration: Attend pre-tender meetings, site inspections, client presentations, and lead post-tender negotiations.
- Handover: Conduct thorough pre-construction handovers to project delivery and operations teams once contracts are awarded.

Key Skills & Experience Required

- Proven Track Record: Minimum 10+ years of estimating experience within the Australian civil construction, earthworks, demolition, or remediation sectors.
- Software Proficiency: Strong expertise in industry-standard estimating software (e.g., Expert Estimation / Cubit / Candy / Bluebeam / Excel).
- Analytical Mindset: Excellent ability to interpret complex geotechnical reports, contaminated land assessments, and civil engineering designs.
- Communication & Negotiation: Outstanding commercial acumen with proven ability to build strong relationships with clients, subbies, and internal teams.
- Qualifications: Tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or an equivalent trade background.
