The Opportunity
St Gabriel's School is seeking an experienced and proactive Risk and Compliance Officer to coordinate and oversee key risk, compliance, child safeguarding, workplace health and safety and governance activities across the School.
Reporting directly to the Principal, the role works collaboratively with leaders and staff across all areas of the School to translate legislative, regulatory and EREAFSL (the School’s governing body) requirements into practical approaches that are appropriate to the School's operational context. The role provides advice and guidance, monitors obligations and emerging risks, and facilitates compliance and assurance activities.
This is a diverse and important role that sits across risk management and compliance, with a strong focus on embedding and maintaining effective systems, processes and practices. Working closely with School leaders, the successful applicant will help ensure the School's policies, practices and operations align with legislative, regulatory and organisational requirements,
while promoting a culture of accountability, safety and continuous operational improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Overseeing and continuously improving the School's risk, compliance and governance framework.
- Facilitating risk management activities, including risk assessments, emergency management planning and maintenance of the School's Risk and Hazard Register.
- Ensure effective incident management through the monitoring and reporting of incidents, hazards, near misses, corrective actions and staff training.
- Supporting governance, school registration, audit and assurance activities to ensure organisational obligations are met.
- Monitoring changes to legislative, regulatory and EREAFSL requirements and supporting their practical implementation within the School.
- Supporting the ongoing effectiveness of the School's WHS framework, including risk assessments, Workers' Compensation and Return to Work processes.
- Supporting implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of child safeguarding systems, practices and compliance requirements.
- Identifying emerging and significant risks and providing reporting to the Principal to support informed decision-making and appropriate risk treatment.
- Build staff capability and promote a culture of accountability, safety and continuous improvement through practical advice, guidance and training.
- Maintaining contemporary knowledge of risk, compliance, child safeguarding, WHS and workforce governance practices.
Selection Criteria
Essential Criteria
- Demonstrated experience supporting risk, compliance, workforce governance, WHS, safeguarding and/or governance activities within a complex organisational setting.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply legislative, regulatory and organisational requirements and translate them into practical workplace processes and practices.
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships, influence stakeholders and foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities, maintain strong attention to detail and deliver outcomes within required timeframes.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify risks, recommend solutions and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative, maintain confidentiality and work both independently and collaboratively.
- Current Working with Children Check (WWCC) or the ability to obtain one prior to commencement.
- Working knowledge of child safeguarding, WHS, privacy, records management and workforce governance requirements.
- Demonstrated commitment to the NSW Office of Children’s Guardian Child Safe Standards.
- Commitment to Catholic and Edmund Rice Education ethos of the School.
- Australian Citizen, permanent resident or a valid visa with full working rights in Australia.
Preferred Criteria
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in risk management, governance, business, workplace health and safety, law or a related discipline.
- Experience working within the education, disability, not-for-profit or similarly regulated sector.
- Experience supporting audits, reviews, school registration processes or organisational assurance activities.
- Experience supporting Workers' Compensation and Return to Work processes.
- Experience working with risk, compliance or governance frameworks within a federated or multi-site organisation.
