Staff Data Engineer (Data Platform & Modernisation)
We're building next-generation cloud-native data platforms that power critical financial and regulatory outcomes.
You are passionate and hands-on about modern data engineering, cloud technologies, AI-enabled engineering and technical leadership.
Together we can build tomorrow's bank through world-class engineering and data innovation.
Do work that matters
As a Staff Data Engineer within Financial Services & Control Technology, you will provide technical leadership across the design, delivery, modernisation and ongoing evolution of our strategic data platforms.
You will be hands-on, responsible for shaping data architecture, engineering standards and platform capabilities that support Product Control and broader Finance Technology outcomes. Working across engineers, architects, delivery teams and business stakeholders, you will drive the development of secure, scalable and resilient cloud-native data solutions aligned with the Bank's strategic objectives.
A key initial focus of this role will be leading the modernisation of legacy Microsoft SQL Server-based data platforms into AWS-native services. Following migration, the role will continue to own and evolve the platform through ongoing feature delivery, operational excellence, automation and AI-enabled engineering practices.
See yourself in our team
This role sits within the Financial Services & Control Crew, where we design and deliver technology platforms that provide trusted, accurate and timely financial information supporting the Bank's financial and regulatory obligations.
As a Staff Data Engineer, you will be a hands-on senior technical leader within the Engineering Chapter, driving platform strategy,
engineering excellence and technical decision-making while mentoring engineers and contributing to the broader data engineering community.
In this role, you will:
- Design, deliver and ensure the ongoing evolution of a scalable, secure and cost-effective cloud-native data platform supporting Product Control
- Drive the hands-on modernisation of legacy data, reporting and analytics capabilities, transitioning from Microsoft SQL Server, SSIS, SSRS and SSAS to AWS-native services including Aurora PostgreSQL, AWS Glue, Amazon Redshift, QuickSight and Snowflake.
- Design, build and optimise enterprise-scale data products, databases and data pipelines that deliver trusted, high-quality data assets for reporting, analytics and regulatory requirements.
- Give direction and take technical decisions and actually do data modelling, database design, performance optimisation and cloud data architecture, ensuring solutions are scalable, resilient and aligned with enterprise standards.
- Establish and enhance automated data quality, reconciliation, monitoring and operational controls to support platform reliability and governance outcomes.
- Drive and embed the adoption of modern engineering practices including CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, platform automation and AI-assisted engineering capabilities to improve delivery velocity and quality.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership, mentoring and engineering oversight, reviewing designs and implementations while uplifting capability across the Data Engineering practice.
- Partner with architects, engineers,
data consumers, business stakeholders and delivery teams to successfully modernise, operate and continuously enhance the Product Control data platform.
- Enable strategic platform initiatives through all stages of delivery, including design, engineering, testing, reconciliation, migration, cutover, production support and ongoing feature development.
We're interested in hearing from people who:
- Bring deep data engineering expertise and enjoy combining hands-on delivery with technical leadership. We don't expect you to have experience across every technology listed below, however exposure to a broad range of these capabilities will help you succeed in this role.
Requirements and experience
- Extensive experience designing, building and evolving enterprise data platforms, data products, ingestion frameworks and ETL/ELT solutions in complex environments.
- Strong expertise in SQL, PostgreSQL, data modelling and database performance optimisation, with the ability to make architecture and design decisions across large-scale platforms.
- Hands-on experience with AWS data services including Aurora PostgreSQL, AWS Glue, Amazon Redshift, Amazon S3, Athena, Lambda and EMR.
- Experience modernising legacy data platforms and data warehouses, including migration of databases, ETL processes, reporting solutions and analytical workloads to cloud-native architectures.
- Strong data engineering experience spanning ingestion, transformation, data warehousing, reporting, reconciliation and operational support capabilities.
- Proficiency in Python and/or PySpark for building scalable, automated and maintainable data pipelines.
- Experience developing and optimising cloud-native ETL and ELT solutions, leveraging contemporary
