Wrays is looking for an experienced intellectual property lawyer to join our Trade Marks team.
Wrays is one of Australia’s longest-established specialist intellectual property firms and is now part of the Rouse Group, a leading international IP services provider with offices across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This gives our Australian practice access to a broader international network while retaining the specialist focus and client service that define Wrays.
We are looking for an Associate or Senior Associate, ideally with around 4–8 years’ post-qualification experience. You will have strong trade marks experience and be comfortable advising clients across clearance, brand protection, enforcement, disputes and portfolio strategy. The level of appointment will depend on experience and capability.
About the role
Working closely with our Principals and senior trade marks specialists, you will advise Australian and international clients on the adoption, protection, use and enforcement of their brands.
The role covers the full range of trade mark work, with a particular focus on clearance and risk advice, brand protection, enforcement, contentious matters and strategic portfolio issues. You will also manage significant Australian and international trade mark portfolios and advise on related copyright, consumer law and broader IP issues where they arise.
The role includes:
- advising on trade mark clearance, registrability, use and infringement risk
- developing filing, protection and portfolio strategies for Australian and international brands
- handling oppositions, non-use proceedings, enforcement matters and negotiated resolutions
- advising on brand protection and pre-litigation strategy,
including working with our IP disputes and litigation team where appropriate
- managing prosecution and more complex examination issues across domestic and international portfolios
- preparing clear, commercially focused advice for clients and overseas counsel and managing the day-to-day conduct of matters
- contributing to pitches, proposals and other business development activities as required.
Our clients range from Australian businesses to major international brands across sectors including technology, telecommunications, media and entertainment, FMCG, life sciences and consumer products.
About you
We are looking for an Associate or Senior Associate, ideally with around 4–8 years’ PQE, who is admitted to practise as a lawyer in Australia and has strong experience in Australian trade mark law and practice. The level of appointment will depend on experience and capability.
Ideally, you will have worked across a broad mix of clearance and risk advice, prosecution, portfolio strategy, oppositions, enforcement and other contentious trade mark matters, and be comfortable advising clients directly on both day-to-day and more complex brand issues.
In particular, you will:
- have experience across clearance and risk advice, prosecution, portfolio strategy and contentious trade mark matters
- be able to work through complex or uncertain issues and give clients a clear, practical view on risk, options and next steps
- have strong drafting and analytical skills, sound commercial judgment and valuable attention to detail
- be comfortable dealing directly with clients and overseas counsel and taking responsibility for the day-to-day progress of matters
- be organised, reliable and able to manage competing matters and deadlines
- work well as part of a team and be comfortable with appropriate review and input from Principals.
Experience in copyright, consumer law, IP licensing, commercialisation, M&A; due diligence or broader IP disputes would be useful but is not essential.
