n
About the Role
n
ACE Integrated Energy is seeking a practical and detail-focused Mechanical Design Engineer to join our switchboard manufacturing team in Melbourne.
n
This is a mechanical design and production-focused position. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating accurate 3D models and manufacturing drawings for switchboard enclosures and associated sheet-metal components.
n
You will manage designs through the complete manufacturing process, including 3D modelling, sheet-metal development, flat patterning, nesting, material selection and preparation of files for laser cutting and production.
n
You will work closely with our Design Support Team, laser operators, fabrication personnel, assembly teams and suppliers to ensure that designs are practical, accurate and ready for manufacture.
n
This position is focused on mechanical engineering, sheet-metal design and production coordination.
n
Key Responsibilities
n
n
Create detailed 3D models of switchboard enclosures using SolidWorks.
n
Design sheet-metal components including cubicles, doors, panels, mounting plates, gland plates, covers, brackets and internal support structures.
n
Produce accurate manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings and fabrication details.
n
Develop sheet-metal flat patterns with correct bend allowances and manufacturing tolerances.
n
Prepare nesting layouts to maximise material utilisation and minimise waste.
n
Prepare and process files for laser cutting, folding and fabrication.
n
Work with different materials, thicknesses and finishes, including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and other specified materials.
n
Coordinate laser-cutting requirements with internal production teams and external suppliers.
n
Ensure drawings and cutting files are released in line with production priorities.
n
Review designs for manufacturability, assembly access, clearances and efficient material usage.
n
Maintain accurate bills of materials, drawing registers and revision records.
n
Provide technical support to laser, fabrication, and assembly personnel.
n
Resolve design and production issues in consultation with the Operations Manager and Design Support Team.
n
Monitor the progress of jobs from design release through fabrication and assembly.
n
Assist with production planning and communicate potential delays, material issues or manufacturing constraints.
n
Update drawings to reflect approved production changes and as-built requirements.
n
Support the development of standard enclosure designs, SolidWorks templates and reusable component libraries.
n
Contribute to improvements in manufacturing efficiency, material utilisation, and production flow.
n
n
About You
n
n
A qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline.
n
Strong proficiency in SolidWorks.
n
Demonstrated experience with 3D modelling and detailed manufacturing drawings.
n
Strong knowledge of SolidWorks sheet-metal tools.
n
Experience producing flat patterns for laser cutting and fabrication.
n
Experience with nesting and material optimisation.
n
A sound understanding of sheet-metal fabrication processes, including laser cutting, folding, welding and assembly.
n
An understanding of bend allowances, bend deductions, tolerances and material properties.
n
The ability to design using different material types and thicknesses.
n
Experience preparing DXF files and other production-ready files for laser processing.
n
The ability to identify design clashes, manufacturing risks and production constraints.
n
Robust attention to detail and document-control skills.
n
Good communication and coordination skills.
n
A practical, solutions-focused approach to engineering and manufacturing.
n
The ability to manage multiple jobs and production priorities.

n
Experience coordinating work with laser-cutting suppliers.
n
Experience creating bills of materials and manufacturing packs.
n
Knowledge of lean manufacturing or continuous-improvement principles.
n
Previous electrical design experience is not essential as electrical design will be managed by the Design Support Team.
n
n
What We Are Looking For
n
We are looking for someone who can take ownership of the mechanical design and manufacturing preparation process. You will be comfortable working both at a computer and directly with production personnel on the factory floor.
n
The ideal candidate will be able to take a concept or design requirement and convert it into an accurate, practical and production-ready SolidWorks model, flat pattern, nesting layout and manufacturing package.
n
You will understand that a successful design must not only look correct on screen, but must also be efficient to cut, fold, assemble and manufacture.
n
What We Offer
n
n
A full-time position with a growing Melbourne-based manufacturing business.
n
A hands-on engineering role with direct involvement in production.
n
The opportunity to manage designs from initial modelling through to completed manufacture.
n
Exposure to a variety of switchboard enclosure and sheet-metal manufacturing projects.
n
