Bossong Engineering is a modern and technology-driven engineering company servicing the mining, oil & gas, construction and heavy industry sectors across Australia.
Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced TIG / MIG Welder to join our Welshpool workshop team in a full-time position with regular overtime available.
This position will involve an approximate ***** mix of GTAW (TIG) and GMAW/FCAW (MIG) welding, depending on current projects.
While strong capability across both processes is required, high-quality TIG welding ability is a key requirement for this position.
The successful applicant must be confident welding a broad range of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel and specialised/alloy steels, while consistently producing high-quality work to specified procedures.
Key Responsibilities
You will be involved in the fabrication and welding of:
Mining and oil & gas components
Pipework, spools and pressure components
Structural and heavy fabricated assemblies
Chutes, tanks and skids
Carbon steel
Stainless steel
Quenched and tempered steels
Alloy and specialised steels
Your work will include:
GTAW/TIG welding of pipework and fabricated components
GMAW and FCAW welding across a range of steel grades
Pipe and positional welding
Setting up and controlling argon purge systems
Setting up and operating pipe rotators/positioners
Preparing, fitting and aligning components prior to welding
Reading and interpreting workshop drawings, weld symbols and WPS requirements
Selecting and adjusting appropriate welding parameters
Controlling heat input and interpass temperatures where required
Grinding, cleaning and finishing welded components
Maintaining a high standard of weld quality and workmanship
Our workshop utilises modern welding technology including Lincoln S500 and S700 welding systems with HyperFill capability.
Experience working to standards such as AS**** SP, AS****,
ASME IX and AWS D1.1 will be highly regarded.
Weld Test
Successful applicants will be required to complete a GTAW/TIG weld test on 316 stainless steel pipe as part of the recruitment process.
The test will require the applicant to demonstrate their ability to:
Prepare and fit the pipe for welding
Set up the TIG welding machine and appropriate parameters
Independently set up purge lines and the purge system
Establish and maintain an effective argon purge
Set up and correctly utilise a pipe rotator
Produce a high-quality TIG root
Complete the weld to the required standard
Maintain appropriate heat input and interpass control
Produce acceptable internal and external weld quality
Applicants should be capable of completing the setup and weld test with minimal supervision.
The 316 stainless steel pipe test is used to demonstrate the standard of TIG welding ability required for the position.
The day-to-day role involves approximately equal amounts of TIG and MIG/FCAW welding across a broad range of materials.
About You
To be successful in this role you will have:
Strong GTAW/TIG welding ability
Strong GMAW/MIG and FCAW welding ability
Demonstrated ability to weld a variety of steel grades and materials
Experience welding carbon and stainless steels
Strong pipe welding skills
Experience with stainless steel purge welding
Ability to independently set up purge lines and equipment
Experience using pipe rotators/positioners
Good fabrication and fit-up skills
Excellent understanding of joint preparation and weld cleanliness
Ability to read and follow WPSs, workshop drawings and weld symbols
Strong understanding of welding parameters and heat control
High standard of workmanship and attention to detail
Strong focus on safety and quality
Reliable attendance and a positive attitude
Ability to work effectively within a workshop team
Experience with alloy steels, quenched and tempered materials, mining equipment, oil & gas fabrication or pressure piping will be highly regarded.
Current welding qualifications/certifications are advantageous; however, demonstrated welding ability and successfully completing Bossong's weld test are essential requirements for this position.
You will be required to provide evidence of your Australian working rights prior to a weld test.
