Job description
Help shape the future of a creative, inclusive community
Upbeat Arts is a vibrant not-for-profit organisation using the power of the creative arts to improve lives, foster connection, and build inclusive communities.
Through programs such as inclusive choirs and creative writing groups, Upbeat Arts provides welcoming spaces where adults experiencing mental health challenges can grow in confidence, wellbeing, and artistic expression.
As we enter an exciting new phase of growth, we are seeking a passionate and skilled individual to join our Board of Directors.
This is an opportunity to contribute your expertise to strengthen governance, strategy, and impact in a values-driven arts organisation.
Board Members play a vital role in setting the strategic direction of Upbeat Arts, ensuring sound governance, and supporting the General Manager to deliver on the organisation's mission.
This is a voluntary role suitable for individuals with a commitment to social impact through the arts.
We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the following areas:

Mental Health Services & Policy – to bring expertise in mental health service delivery, policy and the broader mental health system, supporting the Board to strengthen Upbeat Arts' impact and strategic direction.
Key Responsibilities
Contribute to the strategic leadership and direction of Upbeat Arts.
Uphold robust governance and compliance standards, ensuring the organisation operates ethically and sustainably.

Provide specialist input in your area of expertise (Legal and Governance or Mental Health Services and Policy) to support organisational development.
Act as an ambassador for Upbeat Arts, fostering relationships with stakeholders, funders, and community partners.
Actively participate in Board meetings.
Experience & Capabilities
Essential:
Alignment with Upbeat Arts' mission and values.
Demonstrated expertise in legal/governance and/or mental health services
Strategic thinking and sound judgement.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Commitment to good governance and collaborative leadership.
Desirable:

Familiarity with the arts, community, or not-for-profit sectors.
Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) membership or willingness to undertake governance training (completion of Company Directors Course is highly regarded).
Commitment:
Attend regular Board meetings (held virtually or in person depending on location).
Participate in subcommittees or occasional events as required.
Serve a minimum two-year term, with opportunity for renewal.
Why Join Upbeat Arts?
Contribute to meaningful social impact through creative expression.
