About the role
Springfield Lakes Towing and Transport Pty Ltd is seeking an experienced and professional Tow Truck Operator / Machinery Transport Operator to join our dynamic team. This is a full-time position based in Brisbane, QLD 4000.
As a Tow Truck Operator / Machinery Transport Operator, you will play a crucial role in our towing, recovery and heavy transport operations. The position involves the safe and efficient transport, relocation, loading and unloading of vehicles, plant, machinery and heavy equipment across Brisbane, South East Queensland and other locations as required.
You will be responsible for transporting a range of machinery and equipment, including excavators, skid steers, bobcats, loaders, forklifts, generators, rollers, scissor lifts, elevated work platforms, trailers, agricultural equipment, construction equipment and other heavy machinery.
This position requires a strong understanding of load restraint, heavy vehicle operation, machinery handling and workplace safety. You will be expected to represent Springfield Lakes Towing and Transport Pty Ltd professionally while delivering reliable and secure transport services to our customers.
What you'll be doing
- Operating tow trucks, tilt trays, heavy recovery vehicles and machinery transport vehicles safely and efficiently
- Transporting and relocating cars, trucks, plant, machinery, construction equipment and other heavy items
- Loading and unloading heavy machinery and equipment using tilt trays, ramps, winches and other appropriate equipment
- Safely moving machinery on and off transport vehicles while assessing ground conditions, access points, ramps and loading areas
- Transporting machinery between construction sites, workshops, depots, farms, businesses and customer locations
- Moving machinery such as excavators, bobcats, skid steers, loaders, forklifts, rollers, generators, scissor lifts and other plant equipment
- Operating winches and recovery equipment to safely load non-operational machinery and vehicles
- Inspecting machinery before loading to identify potential damage, leaks, loose components or other issues that may affect safe transportation
- Correctly positioning machinery on the transport vehicle to ensure secure weight distribution and vehicle stability
- Securing machinery using appropriate chains, binders, straps, wheel restraints, blocks and other approved load-restraint equipment
- Conducting load-restraint checks before departure and throughout the journey where required
- Ensuring all loads comply with applicable Queensland road transport, mass, dimension and load-restraint requirements
- Checking machinery dimensions and weights prior to transport and identifying potential issues with height, width, length or mass
- Ensuring ramps, trays, decks, tie-down points and other transport equipment are suitable and safe before loading
- Assisting customers with positioning machinery and providing professional advice regarding safe loading and transport
- Safely manoeuvring heavy vehicles in tight construction sites, yards, driveways, workshops and other restricted areas
- Operating recovery equipment to recover and relocate disabled vehicles and machinery
- Responding promptly to breakdowns, recovery requests, machinery movements and transport bookings
- Communicating with customers, site managers, contractors, mechanics, police, emergency services and dispatch staff
- Completing pre-start and post-operation inspections of trucks, trailers, machinery transport equipment and recovery equipment
- Reporting mechanical faults, damage, safety issues and maintenance requirements immediately
- Maintaining accurate records of machinery transported, pickup and delivery locations, times, load details and any incidents
- Taking photographs and documenting existing damage to machinery and vehicles where required before transport
- Assisting with basic mechanical tasks and minor maintenance when required
- Maintaining vehicles, trays, ramps, chains, straps, winches and other equipment in a clean, safe and serviceable condition
- Following all company procedures, safe work practices, traffic management requirements and workplace health and safety policies
- Ensuring all machinery and vehicles are transported without damage and delivered safely and on time
- Maintaining a professional and courteous approach when dealing with customers and other road users
Machinery Moving & Transport Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be required to have, or be willing to develop, strong skills in machinery transportation and heavy equipment movements.
Duties may include:
- Moving machinery between construction and civil works sites
- Transporting non-running or damaged machinery
- Loading machinery using hydraulic tilt trays, ramps and winches
- Transporting equipment from auctions, dealers, workshops and storage facilities
- Moving machinery for earthmoving, construction, landscaping and civil contractors
- Relocating plant and equipment between job sites
- Transporting generators, compressors and other industrial equipment
- Moving forklifts and access equipment
- Transporting attachments and accessories where suitable and legally permitted
- Assisting with machinery recovery from difficult or restricted locations
- Assessing access and loading conditions before commencing a machinery move
- Ensuring machinery is prepared correctly before transport, including lowering attachments and securing moving components
- Checking that buckets, blades, booms, arms, ramps and other moving parts are properly positioned and secured
- Ensuring fuel, hydraulic systems and other components are appropriately managed for transport
- Carrying out final load and restraint inspections before leaving the pickup location
- Safely unloading machinery at the destination and positioning it as directed by the customer or site representative
What we're looking for
- Current and valid Medium Rigid (MR) or Heavy Rigid (HR) driver’s licence
- Proven experience operating tow trucks, tilt trays, heavy vehicles or machinery transport vehicles
- Previous experience transporting or moving heavy machinery, plant and equipment is highly regarded
- Strong knowledge of vehicle recovery, towing techniques and safe machinery transport
- Understanding of load restraint and heavy vehicle loading requirements
- Experience using chains, binders, straps, winches, ramps and other load-restraint equipment
- Ability to safely load and unload heavy machinery
- Good understanding of weight distribution, vehicle dimensions and load stability
- Mechanical knowledge and the ability to identify basic mechanical faults
- Experience operating machinery such as excavators, skid steers, bobcats, loaders or forklifts would be advantageous
- Relevant high-risk work licences or plant operating tickets are highly regarded
- Excellent understanding of workplace health and safety requirements
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Physically fit and capable of performing manual handling and outdoor work
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to assess difficult loading and access situations
- Ability to work independently and make safe decisions while on the road
- Reliable, punctual and willing to work flexible hours when required
