Technical Director - Transmission and Distribution (QLD)

The Energy T&D; sector is experiencing a once-in-a-generation investment cycle, driven by the accelerating buildout of renewable energy infrastructure, network modernisation and the grid upgrades needed to connect new generation to existing systems. THE PROSPECT
This is a senior leadership role for an experienced major projects professional with deep roots in the Australian energy transmission and distribution sector. As Major Projects Director, Transmission and Distribution, you will lead Mott MacDonald's engagement with major clients across the energy Transmission market, directing complex project pursuits, governing large‑scale programme delivery and bringing the commercial intelligence and stakeholder credibility needed to position the firm at the front of this market.
This is project focused role, with your time spent securing and leading projects and governing major programme outcomes with a meaningful commercial mandate: shaping bid strategy, leading contractual negotiations, and working closely with senior client and contractor counterparts to position Mott MacDonald on the work that matters most.
The right person will be as comfortable in a strategy session for a major bid as they are in a project controls review, someone who earns credibility through technical rigour and commercial judgment, and who leads from the front in the most complex and consequential project environments.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
- Lead strategic client positioning and major project pursuit activities across the Energy Transmission market bringing deep market knowledge to pursuit strategies and bid/no-bid decisions
- Participate in opportunity development alongside senior counterparts in partner, contractor and client organisations, building the relationships and positioning that translate into contracted work
- Work with Bid Managers and Bid Principals to prepare commercial collateral, legal inputs and fee development frameworks, including benchmarking and scope definition
- Lead strategy sessions for major bids and provide governance across contractual negotiations solutions-focused, commercially sharp and risk-aware
- Develop and implement appropriate tools and processes for fee development, including scope definition, exclusions, reliance, payment terms and contract negotiation through to successful resolution
- Contribute directly to the development and review of Mott MacDonald's commercial offer on significant pursuits

- Lead strategic client positioning and major project pursuit activities across the Energy Transmission market bringing deep market knowledge to pursuit strategies and bid/no-bid decisions

- Contribute directly to the development and review of Mott MacDonald's commercial offer on significant pursuits
Major Project Delivery
- Establish project team structures and roles that provide the right skills and competencies to deliver major project outcomes on time, on budget and to the quality standards Mott MacDonald's clients expect
- Drive major project inception activities, project management plans, commercial management processes, schedule development, digital tools and risk management frameworks
- Take leadership and governance roles on state and unit-significant major projects, participating in major project contract management reviews and in-flight project reviews
Knowledge Building & Mentorship
- Mentor team members involved in major project delivery with a particular focus on contract negotiation, contractor relationship management and commercial acumen
- Create and update major project collateral based on lessons learned, contributing to Mott MacDonald's continuous improvement in how it delivers at scale
- Leverage and actively contribute to Mott MacDonald's global network knowledge systems and best practice in energy T&D; project delivery
ABOUT YOU
You are a senior major projects professional with deep experience in the Australian energy transmission and distribution sector, someone with the technical depth, commercial acumen and stakeholder credibility to lead complex pursuits and govern significant programme delivery in one of the most active infrastructure markets in the country.
You'll bring:
- Substantial experience leading or directing major projects in the energy T&D; sector in Australia transmission networks, distribution infrastructure, grid connection, substations or related energy infrastructure
- A strong track record in commercial leadership on large, complex engineering contracts; including bid strategy, contractual negotiation, scope management and fee development
- Deep market knowledge across the Australian energy T&D; landscape, understanding how network owners, government agencies and major contractors procure, plan and make decisions
- Demonstrated ability to position a consultancy or contractor for major work with existing relationships across the client and contractor community that open doors and build pipeline
- Experience establishing and leading high-performing project teams on major programmes, with strong project governance, risk management and commercial management capability
- The communication skills and presence to operate credibly with senior client stakeholders, partner organisations and internal leadership across a global firm
- Relevant tertiary or vocational qualifications in engineering or a related discipline; chartership (CPEng or equivalent) highly regarded
