We are seeking an experienced and motivated Leading Hand Carpenter to join our team.
This is a hands-on role suited to a qualified carpenter who is confident running a small crew, taking ownership of day-to-day site activities and working closely with our Project Managers to deliver projects safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
You will remain actively involved in carpentry and construction works while also providing leadership and direction to a small team of approximately 1–4 tradesmen and labourers.
About the Role
As Leading Hand Carpenter, you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day running of your allocated jobs and ensuring works are completed safely, efficiently and to the required standard.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and directing a small crew of tradesmen and labourers
- Working on the tools and completing carpentry works to a high standard
- Managing the day-to-day requirements of smaller projects and work sites
- Planning and coordinating upcoming works with the Project Manager
- Allocating tasks and providing clear direction to other employees onsite
- Reading and interpreting plans, specifications and scopes of work
- Identifying required materials and placing material orders in advance
- Monitoring workmanship, progress and site productivity
- Identifying problems onsite and providing practical solutions
- Making appropriate day-to-day site decisions without requiring constant supervision
- Ensuring tools, equipment and materials required for upcoming works are organised
- Completing site documentation including pre-starts, safety documentation and other project records
- Communicating progress, issues and upcoming requirements to the Project Manager
- Maintaining a safe, organised and professional work site
About You
To be successful in this role,
you will need to be a qualified and experienced carpenter who is confident both on the tools and leading others.
We are looking for someone who:
- Is fully qualified and highly competent across general carpentry works
- Takes pride in producing high-quality workmanship
- Has previous experience as a Leading Hand, Supervisor or experienced Carpenter ready to step into a leadership role
- Can confidently manage and direct a small team
- Can manage their own jobs and take responsibility for getting works completed
- Has solid problem-solving skills and can make practical decisions onsite
- Can identify material requirements and organise orders in advance
- Communicates effectively with Project Managers, employees, subcontractors and clients
- Is reliable, accountable and takes ownership of their work
- Has a strong understanding of site safety requirements
- Is comfortable using technology as part of their day-to-day role
Essential Requirements
- Trade qualification in Carpentry
- Current driver's licence
- Construction White Card
- Strong knowledge of construction and carpentry practices
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead others
- Good communication and organisational skills
- Ability to use an iPad and electronic project documentation
