Do you want to work with bees producing certified organic honey on an island renowned for its pristine wilderness? Kangaroo Island is the world's oldest bee sanctuary and home to the purest remaining strain of Ligurian honey bee, renowned for its productivity and placid nature.

The business is based in Kingscote, the main town on Kangaroo Island, and this (or nearby) is where you will most likely live. We manage around 1,000 owned and managed hives across remote apiary sites, so you will also work in places most people never get to see.

The Kangaroo Island Ligurian Bee Co. is a family-owned, vertically integrated beekeeping, food manufacturing and agritourism business. We sell our multi-award-winning honey and other bee products predominantly online and through our tourism and retail business, Island Beehive, where we also run guided Beekeeping Experience tours for small groups.

Our purpose is to protect, share and raise awareness of Kangaroo Island's unique Ligurian bee heritage. As we continue strengthening our colonies after the 2020 bushfires and recent droughts,



bee health comes before short-term hive growth or honey production. Our premium and limited-release honeys depend on disciplined organic practice, provenance, quality and traceability from hive to jar.

Our workdays as a beekeeper are a mix of everything. A typical spring day can involve brood inspections, colony build-up, queen breeding and requeening, swarm prevention, moving hives, lifting honey, harvesting and extraction, digital record keeping, equipment maintenance and much more.

Taking guided Beekeeping Experience tours is part of the role once you have been trained and signed off. You will need to explain the story of Kangaroo Island's Ligurian bees and our beekeeping practices clearly, keep visitors safe around live bees and create a memorable experience. The Beekeeper Tour Guide position will take tours more regularly, but both successful candidates must be comfortable speaking with visitors.

We are looking for someone safety conscious. We have invested in high-quality, well-maintained equipment, and we rely on every team member to look after themselves, their teammates and our gear. You must follow safe work, fatigue, load-restraint and remote-work controls and speak up or stop work when something is unsafe.

Biosecurity, certified organic integrity and accurate records are non-negotiable. You will protect the bees, the surrounding environment and the provenance of every crop by following movement, hygiene, inspection, harvest and traceability procedures and reporting unusual findings immediately.

We are looking for self-motivated achievers who want to grow professionally and personally and become leaders in the industry. Once you have proven your commitment and competency, there are opportunities to grow into other roles across our expanding business.

1. You are content with your own company and comfortable in remote and isolated locations.

Kangaroo Island is remote. Travel to the mainland is expensive and takes time. You will be based in Kingscote, a town of around 2,500 people, so you will need to be someone who enjoys being outside the mainstream for periods of time.

Kangaroo Island is ideal for experiencing nature, getting amongst the wildlife,



exploring new trails with new people and discovering the things that really matter in life.

You are happy in the country, on farms and remote properties, working with machinery and solving practical problems as they arise.

2. You have a can-do approach and take ownership.

You are confident in your abilities but keen to keep learning. You are receptive to feedback, take responsibility for mistakes, do what you say you will do, report problems early, leave things better than you found them and help the team when needed.

You value reliability, sustainability, efficiency and effectiveness, continuous improvement and growth.

3. You believe that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad choices of clothing.

There is a saying on Kangaroo Island that 'if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes'. It rains in winter and sometimes in spring, summer and autumn. The wind blows often, and summer days can be very hot while nights remain cold. Our work changes with the weather, but our safety, bee-welfare and quality standards do not.

Full time work begins in Spring 2026. All required beekeeping equipment is provided, and the role may lead to a management position for the right person.

Applicants must already have the right to work in Australia. We're not currently able to offer sponsorship although we may look to in the future.

We can assist with finding accommodation and temporary caravan and shared-amenity accommodation is available if required.

Must have

- experience working with bees,
- no known severe allergy to bee stings or any other conditions that would prevent you safely performing the role on a full-time, long-term basis,
- current right to work in Australia,
- a current MR licence (or the capacity to obtain one) and licence and ability to drive a manual vehicle in Australia, including on rural roads and tracks
- current Australian first aid certificate including CPR
- the physical capacity to safely complete regular outdoor work, wear protective equipment and lift and carry hive equipment, with reasonable adjustments where applicable
- confidence communicating with visitors and willingness to learn and deliver guided Beekeeping Experience tours.
