About the role As a Claims Specialist – Medical Indemnity, you will manage a portfolio of claims from initial assessment through to resolution, delivering timely, defensible and client-centred outcomes.
You will apply your knowledge of medical negligence, duty of care, personal injury law and policy coverage to assess liability, establish reserves, negotiate settlements and identify recovery opportunities.
Reporting to the Portfolio Manager – Medical Indemnity, you will join VMIA’s Risk, Insurance and Claims Solutions division and help deliver best-practice claims management for clients across the Victorian public sector.
Key responsibilities
- Manage medical indemnity claims end to end, including policy interpretation, indemnity and liability assessment, reserving, negotiation, settlement and recovery.
- Build trusted client relationships and provide explicit, compassionate guidance throughout complex and sensitive claims.
- Develop evidence-based claim strategies and recommendations, escalating matters to senior colleagues or legal partners when required.
- Engage and oversee legal providers, expert advisers, advocacy organisations and other service partners to achieve high-quality, cost-effective outcomes.
- Exercise delegated authority to establish reserves and settle claims in line with VMIA’s Claims Management Manual and governance requirements.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation that meet regulatory, financial, audit and reporting standards.
- Identify emerging risks and portfolio trends that can inform insurance products, coverage design and claims practices.
- Contribute to process improvements, knowledge sharing and cross-functional initiatives across VMIA.
- Participate in supervision, debriefing and wellbeing initiatives that support a resilient, trauma-informed workplace.
Who you work with You work closely with the Portfolio Manager – Medical Indemnity and colleagues across the Claims Practice,and Claims Strategy. You also collaborate with teams across VMIA, including , Finance, Actuarial teams, Operations and Insights,
Underwriting and Risk Advisory and Health Sector Practice. Externally, you engage with VMIA clients—including Victorian public sector health services—as well as medical defence organisations, legal panel firms, barristers, mediators, expert advisers, other insurers and third-party service providers to support effective claim resolution and recovery.
What we are looking for
- At least three years’ experience in end-to-end claims management or a related field within a structured, client-focused environment.
- Experience managing medical indemnity, medical negligence, complex personal injury or healthcare-related claims.
- Sound knowledge of duty-of-care assessments, regulatory requirements and relevant or emerging legal precedents.
- Strong analytical, negotiation and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess complex legal, financial and operational issues.
- A client-centred approach and the confidence to manage sensitive stakeholder relationships in high-pressure situations.
- Sound judgment, discretion and empathy when working with traumatic, emotionally charged or reputationally sensitive matters.
- The resilience and adaptability to manage competing priorities and conflict while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
- Strong planning and organisational skills, with accountability for delivering work to agreed quality standards and timeframes.
- Confidence using claims management systems and operating within established governance frameworks.
- An understanding of public sector expectations and the ability to balance service delivery, accountability and risk.
- A collaborative mindset and commitment to continuous learning, improvement and VMIA’s values.
Qualifications
- Associate or Fellow membership of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance is desirable.
- Qualifications in law, business, human services, social work or a related discipline are advantageous but not essential. Relevant industry experience and personal suitability for medical indemnity claims work will be highly regarded.
- You must satisfy the requirements of a fit and proper person under APRA guidelines.

Salary Information
At VMIA, we offer competitive salaries based on the role's classification and your skills and experience. Typically, new employees start at the minimum of the salary range, however, consideration may be given to starting above the minimum of the band should you demonstrate extensive experience in a similar role or possess unique and desirable skills and capabilities required to perform the role.
