The Role: Lead the Plant. Control the Product. Deliver the Plan.
We are seeking an experienced Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) Superintendent to lead the processing and coal delivery function at Blair Athol Coal Mine. This is a senior operational leadership role with accountability for the CHPP, mobile crushing, haulage, train loading, coal quality and the interfaces that move saleable coal from the ROM through to customer delivery.
Reporting to the General Manager, Operations and SSE, this Monday to Friday (9 day fortnight) role is suited to a visible, hands on leader who can translate business priorities into safe, reliable and disciplined execution. You will set clear standards, build team capability, drive plant performance and ensure production, quality, cost and logistics outcomes are consistently achieved.
Success in this role requires strong operational judgement, commercial awareness and the ability to bring people, plant and external service providers together around a single delivery plan.
The Opportunity
As CHPP Superintendent, you will own performance across the coal processing and delivery chain. You will lead CHPP Supervisors and Coordinators while working closely with Maintenance, Health, Safety and Training, Technical Services, Planning, Marketing and Commercial teams to align daily execution with the mine plan, customer specifications and the railing and shipping schedule.
You will have direct influence over plant reliability, coal recovery, product quality, operating cost,
project delivery and logistics performance. The role calls for a leader who identifies constraints early, takes ownership of outcomes and continually lifts safety, efficiency and accountability across the operation.
Responsibilities of the Role
- Lead short and long term operations across the CHPP, mobile crushing, haulage and train loading functions, ensuring safety, productivity, availability, utilisation, cost, quality and efficiency KPIs are achieved.
- Provide visible safety leadership and ensure activities are planned and executed in accordance with the site Safety and Health Management System, statutory requirements and TerraCom standards.
- Lead, coach and develop CHPP Supervisors, Coordinators and crews, setting clear expectations and strengthening accountability for protected production and operational performance.
- Coordinate operational and maintenance priorities, planned shutdowns and work activities to maximise plant reliability and minimise avoidable production loss.
- Own coal quality from the ROM through processing, railing and ship loading, ensuring agreed recovery parameters and customer specifications are understood and achieved.
- Oversee the onsite laboratory and sampling systems to ensure coal quality information is timely and accurate and sampling practices meet company requirements.
- Plan and coordinate coal delivery requirements with Technical Services, Planning, Marketing and Commercial teams to support the railing and shipping schedule.
- Manage operational relationships with rail and port service providers and proactively resolve constraints that could affect product delivery to the customer.
- Manage budgets, forecasts and operating costs across the CHPP, crushing, haulage and train loading functions, ensuring physical performance is aligned with financial expectations.
- Lead capital and minor project works within the processing and logistics areas, ensuring scope, safety, cost, schedule and operational outcomes are effectively controlled.
- Drive continuous improvement across throughput, recovery, reliability, logistics, cost and operational discipline, converting team ideas and performance data into measurable improvements.
- Provide accurate performance reporting and lead operational investigations and action close out, ensuring hazards, incidents and improvement actions are addressed to the required standard.
About You
You are an experienced processing leader who understands that strong CHPP performance comes from disciplined execution, capable people and close control of the full coal delivery chain. You are equally comfortable on the plant, in the planning room and in discussions with senior leaders and external service providers.
You will bring
- Qualifications in Electrical, Mechanical or Process Engineering, or a relevant trade related discipline.
- A minimum of 10 years experience in a similar role leading production and maintenance functions within a coal handling and preparation plant environment.
- Strong practical knowledge of CHPP operations, mobile crushing, train loading, product handling, coal quality, recovery and operational performance.
- A proven record of leading supervisors, coordinators and operational teams and building a culture of ownership, accountability and high performance.
- Strong safety leadership with sound knowledge of risk management, investigations, hazard close out and site safety management systems.
- Sound commercial acumen with the ability to connect physical operating performance with budgets, forecasts, cost drivers and business outcomes.
- A strong understanding of coal delivery logistics, including rail, port and customer quality requirements, and the ability to coordinate competing operational priorities.
- Experience managing shutdowns, contractors, capital works and minor projects with disciplined control of safety, cost, schedule and operational impact.
- Exceptional influencing, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively across operations, technical teams, commercial functions and external providers.
- Strong analytical and problem solving capability, sound judgement and a results focused mindset with a genuine commitment to continuous improvement.
