The Opportunity An established Tier 2 Design & Construct contractor is looking for an accomplished Design Team Lead to lead, develop and elevate its workplace design function.
With more than 15 years in the Sydney market, the business has built a strong reputation across commercial workplace fit-out and refurbishment, with long-standing client relationships and an exceptionally stable team.
This is an opportunity to take ownership of an existing team of workplace designers, set the direction of the function and become the senior face of design across key clients and projects.
The Role
This is a genuine leadership position, but not one that takes you completely away from design.
You will
- Lead, mentor and develop an established team of five
- Set the design direction, standards and expectations across the team
- Lead senior client briefings, presentations and design workshops
- Take projects from initial briefing and concept through design development, documentation and construction
- Provide creative direction across key and high-profile projects
- Strengthen the integration between design, pre-construction and delivery
- Review design documentation with a focus on quality, buildability and commercial outcomes
- Help grow the design team and capability as the business continues to evolve
- Support the team's transition from ArchiCAD to Revit and establish effective workflows and standards
About You
You will already be operating at a senior level within commercial workplace design and have the credibility and presence to represent a well-established contractor in front of its clients.
Ideally, you will bring:
- Extensive commercial workplace fit-out experience
- A background in interior design, interior architecture or architecture
- Previous experience leading, mentoring or managing designers
- Solid concept design, space planning, design development and documentation capability
- Experience taking workplace projects from initial client briefing through to construction
- A polished and confident client-facing style
- Strong presentation and stakeholder management skills
- A practical understanding of construction, buildability, budgets and programmes
- Commercial judgement and a solutions-focused approach
- ArchiCAD and/or Revit capability, with strong Revit experience highly regarded
We are open to candidates currently working within either a D&C;/head contractor environment or an architectural/interior design practice with a strong commercial workplace portfolio.
Why Consider It?
This isn't a role where you'll inherit a design function that needs rebuilding from scratch. The team and platform are already established. The opportunity is to take what is already working and elevate it.
You'll have genuine autonomy to shape the design function, develop the team and influence how design is represented across the wider business, backed by a Managing Director who understands and values design.
For a senior workplace designer ready for greater leadership and ownership – or an established Design Associate looking for more influence – this is a rare opportunity within the Sydney fit-out market.
