Duty Manager — Theatre & Live Performance (Front of House)
Five minutes to house open. There’s a wheelchair party in row C, a late cast change, and a bar that needs to turn over 300 people in a twenty-minute interval. Somebody has to call it. That’s the role.
Spiegelhaus is Melbourne’s home of arts, culture, live spectacle and late nights. At the heart of it is a 100-year-old Spiegeltent presenting cabaret and live performance for up to 350 guests, wrapped in a multi-level rooftop and an amphitheatre-style live music venue. On a big night more than 2,000 people move through the venue across multiple experiences at once.
We had a strong first season. Season two launches September 2026, and we’re building the front-of-house leadership to carry it.
What you’ll run The Spiegeltent and performance operations. You own the house from call to lock-up — you can call a hold, refund, refuse service, evacuate.
- Open the house on time. Every show.
- Brief ushers and allocate doors, aisles and accessibility positions.
- Run late seating, lockout and interval flow to policy.
- Call it with stage management: holds, clearances, show-stops.
- Take the box office handover: seating, access, scanning, capacity.
- Own patron escalations — refunds, accessibility, complaints — through to resolution.
- Keep the house safe: evacuation readiness, first aid, incidents filed within 24 hours.
- Run the bar around the show: pre-show, interval, post-show.
- Reconcile, bank, debrief, hand over.
What you’ll bring
- Front-of-house experience in theatre or live performance — house manager,
FOH duty manager, or head usher ready to step up. Venue management with a real feel for performance also works.
- A current Victorian RSA. First Aid a plus.
- Calm through a show-stop, and the judgement to know what to escalate.
- Genuine care for the patron experience, including accessibility done properly.
- Availability across seven-day trade, nights, weekends and matinees.
Casual or fixed-term full-time
Both are on the table. Casual gives you adaptable shifts and loading. Fixed-term full-time gives you guaranteed hours, a consistent roster and a full run at the season. Tell us which you’re after when you apply.
Where it goes
Duty Manager is the step before Assistant Venue Manager, by design. The DMs who hold the house and develop their ushers are the ones who move into those seats. We’d rather grow them than advertise for them.
There is nowhere else quite like this venue. If you want to run front of house somewhere that takes both the show and the service seriously, we’d love to hear from you.
Why Spiegel Haus
Spiegel Haus brings together theatre, music, hospitality and culture under one roof. There is nowhere else quite like it. This isn’t a venue that hosts one event at a time. It’s a venue where multiple experiences operate simultaneously, each demanding the same standard of execution, leadership and guest experience.
If you’re an operational leader who thrives on complexity, enjoys building exceptional teams and delivering unforgettable guest experiences, we’d love to hear from you.
