About the role
Walgett Shire Council is seeking a hardworking and reliable Urban Maintenance Worker for the Walgett-based Parks and Open Spaces area.
This role inspects, maintains and enhances public infrastructure such as parks, gardens, sporting fields, footpaths, cemeteries, and aquatic facilities. Duties include general horticultural and manual labour tasks and the safe operation of tools, machinery, and vehicles. Adherence to health, safety, and environmental regulations is essential, along with a commitment to quality public service and maintaining a positive image of Council.
This role suits someone who enjoys practical, hands‑on, physical work outdoors.
The position is permanent, full‑time (38 hours per week) with every second Friday an RDO. Candidates will require a valid Class C driver’s licence and a WHS Construction Induction Card. Tickets in plant operation, chemical safety, chainsaw operation and first aid will be highly regarded.
In addition to technical responsibilities, the role requires strong communication and teamwork skills, the ability to follow instructions, and a proactive approach to risk management. Workers are expected to support Council’s goals through collaborative efforts, uphold confidentiality, be adaptable to evolving duties, and promote a positive image of Council to the community.
About you
Success in this position will require:
- Skills to carry out inspections, perform routine maintenance, and operate various plant and equipment safely and efficiently
- Motivation and a practical background in horticulture
- Physical fitness to perform manual labour and work in adverse weather
- Strong understanding of safety procedures and commitment to WHS and environmental standards
- Ability to follow instructions, work within timeframes, and a willingness to learn and adapt
- Reliability, respect, positive attitude, strong communication skills, and effective teamwork
- Pride in public service and upholding the reputation of Council and the community
Note: Not every candidate will meet every criterion—your passion and potential matter.

- Hourly rate of $28.38–$34.14 (depending on experience) plus superannuation
- 5 weeks annual leave and long service leave after 5 years
- Employee Assistance Program for you and your family
- Exceptional working conditions in a family‑friendly, supportive setting
