Pottery For The Planet
Noosaville
Pottery For The Planet (PFTP) designs and produces uniquely handmade, sustainability-driven ceramics — travel cups, travel bowls, mugs, tableware, teapots, vases, homewares and accessories — made, glazed and fired in our own solar-powered studio in Noosaville, with additional production supplied through a partner studio in Vietnam.
Established more than 10 years, PFTP is an industry leader in Australia and New Zealand and has become an inspiration for other businesses looking to expand their environmental focus.
Product reaches customers through three channels: our B2C online store, B2B wholesale (stockists and corporate/custom-branding accounts), and our own showrooms in Noosa and Eumundi.
The General Manager is accountable for the overall sales and profitability of the business across all three channels. This is a commercially driven, KPI-accountable role: the GM sets and owns the numbers in collaboration with the Director, then works with a team of department managers to deliver them.
KEY DELIVERABLES
1. Sales & Profitability The primary objective of the role. The GM owns revenue and margin performance across every channel and the budget that underpins it.
- Own overall sales and profitability targets across B2C online store, B2B wholesale, and Showrooms
- Set, manage and report against the annual budget, including revenue, cost of goods, margin by channel and departmental expenses.
- Set channel-specific sales targets and track performance against them, adjusting activity and resourcing as needed
- Make pricing, product mix, and channel investment decisions to protect and grow margin
- Report regularly to the business owner on trading performance against budget and targets
- Minimum 10% sales growth across all sales channels
2. Production Delivery
Ensuring the Noosaville studio produces enough of the right product, on time, to support sales across all channels.
- Set and hold the HQ studio production team accountable to production schedules and output targets that support sales forecasts
- Work with Production Coordinator to plan production capacity against forecast demand, seasonality and new product launches
3. Inventory Management and Optimisation
- Optimisation of product range, retaining high profit lines, discontinuing inefficient lines, trialing and adding new products to current ranges
- Regular review of product profitability and sell-through rates
4.
Supply Chain & Logistics
Making sure product gets from the kiln to the customer, across every channel, without stock issues holding back sales.
- Oversee inventory management and stock control across the studio, warehouse, showrooms and online store
- Work with Warehouse Manager to manage pick, pack and dispatch operations and shipping partners for online and wholesale orders
- Manage regular ordering schedule and placement of orders with Vietnam partner studio and coordinate inbound logistics including customs, freight and landed costings.
- Liaise with third party suppliers such as Australia Post, Startrack etc.
5. Marketing & Brand
Directing the marketing that drives demand into all three sales channels.
- Own the marketing calendar across the online store, social channels, email community and new product launches
- Work with Marketing Manager to ensure campaign activations are in-line with overall business goals
- Ensure marketing reflects PFTP's sustainability positioning and handmade brand story
- Track marketing performance against sales and adjust activity and spend accordingly
6. Leadership Through Department Managers The GM leads the business through its department managers.
- Lead, coach and hold accountable the department managers responsible for production, retail/showrooms, marketing and warehouse/logistics
- Set explicit objectives and KPIs for each department manager, aligned to the business's sales and profitability targets
- Maintain individual knowledge of, and relationships with, every team member, even though day-to-day supervision sits with department managers
- Build and maintain a culture of accountability, collaboration and support between department managers
- Conduct regular performance reviews with Department Managers
7. People & HR
- Successful candidate will have prior experience and skills to step in as an authority within the business, and feel comfortable running regular team reviews and performance conversations, in partnership with department managers
- Review resourcing requirements against budget and sales results, adjusting team structure as needed
- Own recruitment and onboarding for new team members across all functions
- Oversee payroll processing and roster management across the business
8. Business expansion
