Some people are just valuable with their hands.
If that's you, this is a job you've probably never heard of.
Under a microscope, a hair follicle is about a millimetre across. On a procedure day, our technicians will separate and prepare a few thousand of them — one at a time, by hand, with the kind of steadiness that most people simply don't have. Then they'll place those grafts into the scalp, in a pattern designed to look like it grew there.
It's precise, quiet, absorbing work. There's a rhythm to it, and people who have it tend to love it.
There's also a moment, months later, when a patient comes back and can't stop touching their hairline. That part doesn't get old either.
What you'd actually be doing
- Working under magnification to dissect and prepare follicular grafts
- Placing grafts under the direction of the surgeon
- Preparing and turning over the theatre between cases
- Looking after patients through what is, for most of them, a long and slightly nerve-wracking day
Procedure days are long — typically 6-7 hours — and you're seated and focused for most of it. We build in proper breaks, but we want to be upfront that this is not a job with much moving around. Some people find that meditative. Others find it hard. Both reactions are fair, and it's better to know which one you are before you apply.
Who tends to be good at this
We don't need medical or nursing experience. We train everyone from scratch, on site, from day one.
What we can't train is the hands. The best technicians we've hired have come from all sorts of backgrounds — dental technicians, jewellers, nail technicians, tattoo artists, embroiderers, model-makers, lab assistants, musicians, watch repairers, people who build things at their kitchen table on weekends.
If you've ever been told you're unusually patient with fiddly things,
we'd like to hear from you.
You'll need to be comfortable working with fine detail under magnification (glasses or contacts are completely fine), reliable about start times, and genuinely at ease around people who are feeling vulnerable.
What we offer
- Complete training on site, alongside the lead surgeon. No prior experience assumed.
- A structured progression path. You start at $30/hour during training and move through defined competency levels as your skills are signed off — [Level 1 → Level 2 → Senior Technician], reaching $36/hour. We'll tell you exactly what each step requires.
- A small, stable team where you'll be trained by the surgeon directly rather than passed down a chain.
- Predictable hours. We run procedure days on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. and would want you for four days per week. Consistency matters more to us than volume.
We invest heavily in the people we train, so we're honest about wanting someone who's looking for a place to stay rather than a stepping stone. If you're after something for six months, this probably isn't it.

Watch this before you apply. It'll show you the theatre, the microscopes, and what a procedure day actually looks like. If it appeals to you, that's a good sign.
To apply
Send us your CV, plus three or four sentences answering this:
Tell us about something you've made, repaired, or done with your hands that required more patience than most people would have had.
It doesn't need to be work-related. We read every one of these, and it matters more to us than your CV does.
Applicants must have the right to work in Australia. [Police check / immunisation requirements as applicable.] Atlantis Medical is an equal opportunity employer and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
