House Leader – Complex Disability Support
Permanent Full-Time – 76 hours per fortnight
Rockhampton QLD
We're not simply looking for a House Leader. We're looking for the right person for one particular participant.
All Types of Care Queensland is seeking an experienced, energetic and highly engaged disability professional to co-lead an established Supported Independent Living in brand new SDA home in North Rockhampton. This is a rare opportunity to secure permanent full-time employment – 76 hours per fortnight – within a hands-on disability support role.
You'll work alongside an experienced part-time House Leader who already has strong knowledge of the participant, her family, the home and the extensive stakeholder network surrounding her.
This is not an office-based management position.
The majority of your working hours will involve direct participant support as part of the SIL roster, including rostered sleepovers, while also carrying important House Leader responsibilities.
About the person you'll be supporting
This role is ultimately about finding the right person for her. You'll be supporting a young woman with complex disability support needs who communicates non-verbally and experiences significant behaviours of concern.
She lives with epilepsy and is currently undergoing medication changes, meaning strong observation, accurate documentation and timely communication are particularly important.
Her support environment also includes a Behaviour Support Plan and regulated restrictive practices. The successful applicant must be comfortable working within an authorised restrictive-practice framework and completing all required participant-specific training, including MAYBO.
Some situations can be physically challenging.
For this reason, we need someone who can remain calm, follow behaviour-support strategies consistently and maintain professional judgement during difficult situations.
But this role isn't only about managing risk.
She needs someone with energy.
Someone outgoing. Someone who gets involved.
Someone who enjoys getting out of the house, supporting community participation, creating opportunities and helping make everyday life active and meaningful.
She needs staff who will take the time to genuinely learn her communication, personality, preferences, routines, triggers and the subtle changes that can indicate something isn't right.
If your preferred style of disability support is sitting back and waiting for the participant to initiate everything, this probably isn't the right house for you.
The House Leader role
You'll co-lead the home, rather than being expected to carry the responsibility alone. The existing part-time House Leader has already developed strong relationships with the participant, family and stakeholder team.
We're looking for a full-time House Leader who can complement that existing leadership by providing greater coverage across the 24/7 roster.
You will need to be collaborative.
We're not looking for someone who needs to walk in and take over.
We want two House Leaders who communicate well, share responsibilities and provide the staff team with consistent expectations.
Hands-on leadership
Our House Leaders lead from within the home.
Your role will include
- Providing high-quality, person-centred direct support.
- Developing a strong understanding of the participant's non-verbal communication.
- Supporting meaningful activities, independence and community participation.
- Working rostered direct-support shifts/sleepovers.
- Helping provide day-to-day leadership and consistency within the staff team.
- Supporting staff to correctly follow participant support plans, Behaviour Support Plans, health plans and risk-management strategies.
- Supporting consistent implementation of regulated restrictive practices in accordance with authorised plans, organisational requirements and relevant legislation.
- Applying MAYBO strategies and participant-specific behaviour-support training appropriately.
- Recognising and reporting changes in health, behaviour, presentation and wellbeing.
- Closely observing and documenting changes during medication adjustments.
- Supporting secure medication practices within the scope of the role and participant-specific procedures.
- Understanding the participant's epilepsy management requirements and responding appropriately to seizure activity.
- Leading effective shift handovers.
- Monitoring the quality of progress notes and participant documentation.
- Ensuring incidents, hazards and emerging risks are identified, documented and escalated.
- Completing allocated house audits, checks and risk-management actions.
- Following agreed corrective actions through to completion.
- Supporting the orientation and development of new workers within the home.
- Identifying inconsistent, inappropriate or unsafe support practice and escalating concerns appropriately.
- Maintaining strong professional boundaries.
- Maintaining a safe, organised and respectful home environment.
A major stakeholder component
This participant has a large and active multidisciplinary stakeholder network. The House Leader will be an important link between what happens in the home and the broader team supporting the participant.
You may work with people including:
- family and informal supports;
- behaviour support practitioners;
- allied health professionals;
- nursing and medical professionals;
- support coordination;
- SDA/housing stakeholders;
- other specialist providers;
- our Service Delivery Facilitator; and
- our Service Delivery Manager.
You will need to communicate observations accurately, participate constructively in relevant meetings, follow through agreed actions and ensure key information reaches the support team. You won't be expected to make decisions outside your authority.
You will be expected to know when something needs escalating and to reliably follow through when you agree to complete something.
Who we're looking for
This is not an entry-level position. We're looking for someone who can demonstrate relevant disability-sector experience and/or qualifications on their resume.
The right person will ideally bring experience across several of the following areas:
- Supported Independent Living;
- complex disability support;
- significant behaviours of concern;
- non-verbal communication;
- positive behaviour support;
- Behaviour Support Plans;
- regulated restrictive practices;
- MAYBO or comparable behaviour-response training;
- epilepsy or seizure management;
- medication administration and monitoring;
- incident reporting;
- risk identification and management;
- senior support or leadership responsibilities; and
- multidisciplinary stakeholder communication.
Relevant qualifications in Disability, Community Services or a related field are highly regarded.
Just as importantly, we're looking for the right personality.
You should be:
- outgoing and energetic;
- calm under pressure;
- highly observant;
- organised;
- reliable;
- confident communicating with professionals;
- comfortable raising concerns;
- willing to take responsibility for following tasks through;
- able to maintain strong professional boundaries;
- collaborative with your co-House Leader; and
- genuinely interested in working directly with a participant with complex needs.
The roster
This is a permanent full-time position providing 76 hours per fortnight. Because this is a 24/7 SIL environment, your roster will include a combination of direct-support shifts and sleepovers.
Sleepovers are an essential requirement of this position.
Applicants who are unable or unwilling to undertake rostered sleepovers should not apply. The position may also include weekend and other rostered shifts according to the participant's support requirements.
Training
The successful applicant will be required to complete all relevant organisational and participant-specific training.
This may include
- MAYBO;
- Behaviour Support Plan and restrictive-practice training;
- epilepsy/seizure management;
- medication competencies;
- participant-specific communication and support strategies; and
- other mandatory NDIS training.
Previous experience is highly regarded, but where appropriate, participant-specific training will be provided.
Looking for your next career step?
This role is an opportunity to build genuine experience in complex SIL leadership, multidisciplinary stakeholder engagement and service delivery while remaining directly involved in participant support. As All Types of Care Queensland continues to grow, future opportunities may arise within our Service Delivery Facilitator and management structure for people who demonstrate the performance, capability, experience and qualifications required.
We don't promise promotions simply because someone has been in a role for a certain period.
We do want to develop good people who demonstrate that they're ready for greater responsibility.
Essential requirements
Applicants must be able to meet the relevant requirements of the position, including:
- Current or obtainable NDIS Worker Screening clearance.
- Current First Aid and CPR.
- Current Australian driver's licence.
- Ability to work permanent full-time hours.
- Ability and willingness to work rostered sleepovers.
- Ability to work within a 24/7 SIL roster.
- Completion of required participant-specific and mandatory training.
- Appropriate Australian working rights for permanent full-time employment.
Please read this before applying
We are deliberately being selective because finding the right person for this participant and home is extremely important.
To be considered for an interview, you must submit both:
1. An updated resume Your resume must clearly demonstrate your relevant employment experience and/or qualifications.
If experience or qualifications are not shown on your resume, they cannot be considered as part of the shortlisting process.
2. A tailored cover letter
Your cover letter must tell us:
- Why are you applying for this particular House Leader position?
- Why do you want to work with a participant with this level of complexity?
- What relevant experience and/or qualifications do you bring?
- What experience do you have with behaviours of concern, SIL, non-verbal communication, epilepsy, medication or restrictive practices where applicable?
- Why do you believe your personality and approach would suit this participant and home?
- Why should we choose you for an interview?
Applications that do not include both an updated resume and a tailored cover letter addressing the role will not progress to interview.
Generic applications will not be shortlisted. Permanent full time hours alone are not sufficient for progression to interview.
We're not looking for the largest number of applicants.
We're looking for the right person.
If you've read this advertisement and genuinely believe this is the type of participant, environment and leadership opportunity you're looking for, we'd like to hear from you.
