Internship Overview

We are offering an unpaid Mechanical Engineering Trainee Internship based in Canberra for students or recent graduates who want practical exposure to HVAC, hydronic systems, commissioning, controls, and integrated energy systems.

This internship is designed as a learning and training opportunity, where the intern will work alongside the Totex Energy engineering team and gain hands-on experience with real pilot systems. The role is hybrid, with occasional attendance at Canberra pilot sites and remote learning, monitoring, and technical activities.

Training & Learning Activities

- Learn how HVAC and integrated energy systems are assembled, installed, and commissioned.
- Assist engineers with HVAC installation and commissioning activities under supervision.
- Gain practical exposure to hydronic piping layouts, component selection, and system integration.
- Participate in field testing and learn systematic approaches to troubleshooting HVAC systems.
- Learn how engineers identify abnormal system behaviour, faults, and performance issues.
- Assist with basic troubleshooting and system checks under guidance.




- Learn how commissioning records, test results, engineering observations, and issue logs are maintained.
- Participate in testing control strategies and evaluating potential system improvements.
- Gain exposure to the interaction between mechanical systems, sensors, controls, PLCs, Raspberry Pi devices, and communication protocols such as Modbus.

Qualifications

- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Valuable understanding of mechanical engineering, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid systems.
- Familiarity with CAD tools.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and communication skills.
- Comfortable with hands-on work and occasional travel to Canberra pilot sites.

Work Arrangement: Canberra-based hybrid internship. On-site attendance may be required when there are opportunities to participate in installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, or system inspections. Other learning activities, system monitoring, technical review, and analysis can generally be completed remotely.

The emphasis of this internship is on training, practical engineering exposure, mentoring, and developing experience with real-world HVAC and integrated energy systems.
